Yes, it's the same in europe
I talked to few of them, what I found out. Some of them are refugees.
They either have student visas, or some sort of long term visas and they registered with UNHCR to resettled in third country.
Some of them are pimps who brought their girlfriends, sisters, or friend who they are pimping.
Girls just go around and seek custumer while they wait or watch out. I dout they are pushing any hard stuff.
Yes, since they went legal with the weed, you can now find African guys selling harder stuff on the street. I enjoy smoking weed now and then, but I don't want people trying to sell me hard drugs walking down the sidewalk. It's the same way in Europe. It's always African immigrants selling. I imagine they have trouble finding other work, but I also suspect it's organized crime. It's too prevalent to be a coincidence.
I'm concerned that they will sour the Thai people on the idea of keeping weed legal. It's one thing to have people buying weed in shops. Getting harassed on the street is something else. I'd like it to stay legal. Of course, with the money the gov't is probably making, it would probably take something major to have them shut it down.
The Cmdr offers another alternative view
All this talk about bar girl this and bar girl that. Be men. Speak direct. Call them what they are. Prostitutes. Girls that you hire for companionship / sex or both. Does not matter where you find them they all are providing the same basic services.
That being said I have not found a prostitute that wants to anything other than earn her money and go spend it else where. The prostitutes that seek me out for return visits are good business people. Smart marketing. They do no ask me for money. They ask if they have more business with me. I cannot hate on someone trying to make their money.
The only girls that ask me for money have been from Bangkok. They have never met me and when I tell them they can com to Pattaya and have sex with me they are quick to claim they are not prostitutes. Nope, they are just quick to ask a stranger for money. I have only met one girl who was into me for the sex. No money other than her travel and the entertainment expenses for what I wanted to do while she was with me.
I personally do not understand all this talk about sponsorship and the draining of wallets. Maybe it happens. Maybe it does not. I do not know of one simple person that has a problem similar to what has been described here. It is like some ISG urban or YouTube legion. A friend of a friend of a friend. WTF?
The Cmdr Speaks about Tax Law in Thailand
I read a headline that expats will need to start paying taxes in 2025. I'm guessing this is tied into the other new announcement that digital nomads will be allowed to stay in Thailand for extended periods. Guys had been saying they will just switch their occupation from Retired to Digital Nomad since it seems to be a much easier way to stay long term in Thailand.
Has nothing to do with being a expat. It has everything to do with tax law in Thailand and if you are a tax resident of Thailand. Being a Digital Nomad is not going to keep you from paying taxes if you fulfill the requirement to be a tax resident. As for the ease of getting the immigration status you desire I do not know. Individuals should seek counsel from trained Thai professionals if they need assistance with either taxation in Thailand or Immigration issues.
I agree with you on that Tax Resident issue
Has nothing to do with being a expat. It has everything to do with tax law in Thailand and if you are a tax resident of Thailand. However, it being Thailand I suspect I will not really know what is meant by "tax resident" until I am sitting across from the Immigration Officer wielding the O-A Long Stay (Retirement) Visa stamp and she tells me whether I need to pay Thai taxes or not in order to get the ink on it stamped into my passport. Even if I have been given expert, professional, paid advice about it beforehand, whatever that Immigration Officer was told about it that morning will prevail.
However, if Thailand decides to drop the decades' long No Dual Taxation agreement they have had with my country and that of every other expat and frequent long stay visitor I know and decide we are all now Thai "tax residents", that is going to create a mad rush of USD and other currency out of Thailand and into somewhere else.
Which does not sound like something the Thai Government is all that fired up to do in the near future.
