You guys that complain about dirty seawater and high crime rate in Rio (does the copa-girls high asking price actually count as a crime as well? LOL) , you might have a new alternative.

Fellow forum member Britisher has made a new post on the Venezuelan thread about the beach town Puerto La Cruz, in Venezuela.

Britisher has put a lot of good info on the Venezuelan thread lately, and regarding safety Caracas and other big cities is dangerous, while smaller cities is more safe than general South American cities. (and he lives in Argentina and travel around, so he should know).

That said, reports of "Rio ja foi" are a little premature.

It takes a little leg work, but one can recruit the top girl at the top termas for diaria, and it comes out to about 20 reais an hour for a few days. I live in miami and found a deal with AA for $520 so I did an impulse buying an will be there basically for three days and two nights. Luckely I have double nationality USA and Mexico and Mexicans don't need visa.

Got to admit it was the dramatic scenery of Rio's vast bay, green jungle, steep mountains, the huge Iguazu falls, and of course the tall and beautiful girls in the jungle and the carnaval, shown in James Bond's Moonraker, that captured my imagination about Rio.

Downtown Rio is dusty and dreary. The main Cathedral in downtown looks like a dark termite mound. From the inside it looks busy like a bee hive. Everything Portuguese related, like architecture, seem to be dark and dramatic. Brazilians are very serious and intense. They are driven enough to produce good commercial jets. Embraer is number 3 in aircraft revenue worldwide, only behind Boeing and Airbus. It's a significant achievement for any country, left alone a third-world one, to compete favorably against the US and European consortium in that high-tech industry.

Poverty was everywhere. Homeless families with children were sleeping on sidewalk as it rains. Homeless people were sleeping everywhere, even around the high-price hotel Copacabana. I did not enjoy Rio with the high crime risks. I was a lot more relaxed, had a lot more fun with the pretty girls in Foz du Iguacu.

So how was Rio different in the early 70's?
