Regarding the earlier posts on the Juarez that everyone remembers vs. what's left, I'll add this to the mix.
I found the my walk through Juarez to be a mix, not all of it bad.
It was a very quiet weekend for one. I barely saw any cops or problems - something of a surprise for a holiday weekend.
For what it's worth, I had zero hassles from people the whole time I was there.
The Northern end of Mariscal near the Hollywood Club is certainly a mess with all the construction. Baghdad on a bad day on some blocks. Even early in the day there are a number of women out of all sizes and quality. I was approached by a very petite but nice looking woman in her early forties(?) for example who was wearing a flowing blue green dress. Friendly but not pushy. She was headed over to "Caliente" on Juarez Avenue. I passed on the invite but also saw a number of women in the later afternoon/early evening who were doing a lot of "by-standing" on the main avenue. There were definately a few hanging on the side streets near Cleopatra's massage joint. There are hotels that look operational on the streets East of Juarez near Cleopatra's. It looks like it could get sketchy there at the wrong time of the night but they do exist. There appear to be bigger clubs further east down the street(s) where Cleopatra's is but I didn't go there.
As you walk south on Mariscal there are still quite a few hotels or boarding houses. Again, there may be anywhere from 6 to a dozen women out at any given time during the day. This includes the young, old, beautiful and downright unhealthy looking. Another block or two west of Mariscal are possibilities but I'd be a little leery walking in them late at night. It seems less well traveled, still poor and unless you're Hispanic, I think you'd look like a victim waiting to happen.
If you go west a few blocks off of Mariscal near the Hollywood Club, in the evening you will run into a small but thriving trannie zone.
The burrito stand girls are around as well, a few blocks south of the Hollywood Club. I think the earlier post that describes most of them as drug challenged is accurate. I only saw 4-5 for the most part. There are a number of cantinas in the Mariscal area as others have mentioned. I would imagine it's hit or miss there. I walked in a number or them but it was early and generally they weren't busy. This might change later into the evening.
An earlier report mentioned an east-west "alley" a few minutes south of Avenue de Septiembre. In another post it was referred to as "behind the cathedral". This information is accurate and there's a lot going on there. The pedestrian walkway is hard to miss (just keep walking in a southerly direction on Mariscal, Avenida Juarez etc) and if you walk the length of it you'll see on the south side of the alley about 4 small arched entryways that lead to hotel rooms. Women are definately hanging out there even in the early afternoon & later. Some of the women were fairly attractive. I would guess this area caters more to the locals than the tourist zone north of there. There are tons of local markets, shops etc.. that appear geared to local shoppers.
In between these small hotels are a number of cantinas. The cantinas are interesting and I spent about an hour in one of them watching people come and go including some of the girls who were hanging out at the hotels. Inside one, there were maybe 30 women of all sizes, shapes and looks who were there making a few bucks dancing with guys, smoking, drinking etc.. Some of these are labeled "Salon de Baille", some are not. There may be as many as thirty or forty of these cantinas in the streets around the walkway and market. It looks like you could do a book on just these places but I have no idea what your luck would be in them as far as the chicas are concerned.
You should ask yourself two questions before going in any of these cantinas. Question one: Am I a *******? If you answer yes do yourself a favor and don't go in. Question two: Do I speak at least basic to intermediate level of Spanish? If you answer no to this, you are probably just wasting your time.
The reason for this is that the area seems very blue collar to me. The chances of finding someone who speaks any English is probably very small while the chances of finding someone who can and might beat your ass very large if you are acting like a drunken fool. Your language and ability to communicate friendliness would be your main ally in these places. Again, I found everyone to be friendly but these folks are more working class than not and most gringo's wouldn't do very well going up against a guy who say, unloads trucks or worked in a tough factory setting all day.
Just my opinion of course....your mileage may vary.
