Oh yeah one other thing. If you decide to apply for a visa here, It's a real pain in the ass going through the ecuadorian government. Expect it to take a long time and spend alot of time going back and forth to the various ministries to get it done.

Probably the easiest of the visas to get is the 12-X which is a transient visa that you have to get in the states or your country of origen which is good for 90 days. Costs about $60 but you have to have all your paperwork done beforehand if you dont have a sponsor. A work visa the 12-6 is good for 2 years, but is more complicated to get.

Tico rights put any foreigner in CR at risk of losing their property to squatters. That's assuming the person selling the property actually owns it and the lawyer isn't shady. I've heard many a horror story in CR with property transactions.

The receipt for change seems to be a new trend in Quito. I've seen it in a few places now such as Guajira and La Nina. It's not something I care for because it's easier for them to either keep the change if you forget, or they can pad the check and keep your money. It also gives the girl a second chance to keep the change if you come back down and forget.

I'm arriving this time as I always have: with lots of $1s, $5s, $10s and $20s. Some places won't even take $100s (Guajira). I just hit a US bank before arriving. If you don't have change down there, people will try to keep it or they will hand you those $1 coins which I hate.

At least for US citizens, they issue a T-3 Visa upon arrival. It's good for 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the immigration agent. Mine was marked a T-3, 90 days the last 2 trips.

The T-3 is renewable once by going to the Ecuador gov't offices on the day it expires or a few days thereafter.

My trip this time is 59 days as of right now. I guess I could extend it out to 180 days based on the info I found. There is a normal max of 6 months per year in Ecuador on a tourist visa.

Some things raised over the last few days:

1. Property: Foreigners have the same rights and obligations as nationals under the laws. Having said that, Ecuador is going in political directions which may lead to uncertain results. I would not enter real estate at this moment, unless you don't mind taking losses in the short/mid term.

2. Aerogal just suspended service to Miami. Uncertain future, but if you have a ticket with them, AA will fly you on the same date.

3. Col Bog: You certainly like to live on the edge ! BBFS AND Anal ! wow. Have a look at the aids statistics for Ecuador lately? I would not sleep until taking the test at the red cross after one of those sessions. Whatever get's you through the night I guess. By the way, Ecuadorian man take it for granted all man are mongers. They kind of look at you stragely if you refuse a mongering opportunity, so don't worry about it.

It is a frustration reading this forum, being I live here but am too well known for advantures in Quito. Oh well, my work seems to be taking an international tint again, travel and mate indeed, I hope.

Yes he is popular, at the moment. But as he gets more vocal like Chavez (but without Chavez 2-3 million oil barrels a day) and the economy is slowing, he is losing popularity.

Unless in a brutal dictatorship (Cuba), or having unlimited money to spend (Venezuela) the Peoples Love and P4P scenes are remarkably alike: the love goes out the window as soon as the pocket is empty.

The only place I know that seems to be fairly consistent is Guajira. My GFE is from there. They always have at least half a dozen or more by 12-1pm and they are open until 9pm. I have been with the GFE when the owner has called her to ask her when she's coming back in. They are more proactive with keeping the girls there.

The problem is, they work on Ecuador time - just like Tico time in CR. They do what they want when they want to. They don't see the point of being someplace on time. As long as they are there within an hour or two of the agreed upon time, they are on time. That's got to be one of the biggest adjusting factors for americans going to those countries. We expect them to be on time like americans generally are - or at least within a few minutes. The problem with that is that there are no consequences for not being on time.

OK, so here is my top-spot plan for a 3-4 day Quito vacation, I have limited time, limited Spanish knowledge and like upscale places/strip clubs/discos, my short list is as follows:

Nightcats: Amazonas y Orellana, across Marriott, 9pm-2am

El Swing: Bolivia 120 y 10 de Agosto. 9PM-2AM
