I feel sad for these girls, so I would ask for their professions while drinking with them and be more supportive for their holidays savings.

Hard to believe wages are so low in Mexico compared to across the border. My exMIL was a nurse for Mexico for 30 years and draws a pension equivalent to $2 k per month. She must have been the head pediatric nurse from what she is making in retirement. No wonder the policia love to shake down gringos around Revo and Zona Norte. They never mess with me outside of those areas. It is something I prefer to see them outside of the club scene, but understand some prefer the bang and dash. I know the bang and dash probably saves more money in the end as no one gets their feelings hurt and probably don't have to do dinner, club, other miscellaneous expenses. The ones I met outside the clubs were regulars so we were comfortable being around each other. They introduced me to more parts of Baja that I would have never known.

Big spenders have to pay high prices to impress someone else.

Among the liquors, cognacs, tequilas or whiskeys, more expensive bottles tend to have more bites in the taste, may be with finer aromas. To me, some high-end liquors taste so harsh, like soap water, but people are addicted to familiar tastes and scents, and they drink only their specific brands. Expensive liquors are supposedly crafted with less impurities and chemical residues, therefore less likely to cause headache, hang over or poisoning of the digestive tract.

Tequilas all have very strong agave aroma, smelling almost like hot asphalt. Whiskeys have strong aromas of wheat; I prefer the finer aromas of grapes in Cognacs. All over the world crooks would mix dangerous chemicals into cheap liquors to give them hard kicks and quick buzz, like getting knocked on the head with a hammer, they can be lethal if multiple shots are taken. Groups of people have died by consuming unknown liquors.

Tequila staple in bar tend to be Jose Cuervo Especial, cheap $10 a bottle, tastes good, smells good, but does have some chemical side effects. Don Julio 70 is smoother, Solarum 24 K is the smoothest without the harsh agave nose, but more like fragrance in Cognacs. They have to add 24 K gold flakes into it and price it at $240 a bottle in store. They claim the gold flakes are edible but potentially some may get lodged in nooks and crannies of your stomach and intestines and shine bright like a Christmas tree in your stomach X-rays, making your radiologists crap in their pants.

I know a guy addicted to whiskeys, specifically Johnny Walker Blue Label. Once he started drinking he could not stop until he dropped off. Soon he was downing a bottle or two a night before going to bed. The wife said he wasted a lot more money on whiskey than paying the mortgage, taxes, food, cars, his salary could not support his drinking habit, so they were always broke and in debt. She could not stop him so they got divorced. Also he could never get his dick to rise for her after he took to whiskey, so a divorce was a no brainer. The guy ended up homeless, lived in the gutter, got drunk all day on the cheapest liquors he could buy. Nobody knows if or when he died.

To me expensive liquors do not offer significantly better experiences. I would avoid all expensive habits, stick to any good-tasting beers or wines without offensive tastes or odors.

Most Tequila brands (save a few very reputable houses) start overproducing once their brand takes off internationally. Don Julio has been consistently good for as long as I can remember, largely because they priced their product well at the beginning. The vast majority of "top shelf" Tequila is overpriced. What you are paying for is a guarantee of consistent quality. I've seen quality drop off a cliff on too many brands. Casadores and Pueblo Viejo / San Matias are the most glaring examples. If Don Julio starts producing an aejo product in the $20-28 range, you know that brand will eventually turn to trash too.

If you want to drink good stuff at a club, figure out what mid-shelf stuff the bar carries, and start tying them out. The well tequilas that the clubs use are trash- avoid those, and the top-shelf stuff is usually for noobs or the people want to show off money. Most people can't tell the difference in taste between a good mid-shelf tequila and a top-shelf one, especially if it's in a mixed drink.
