I really feel sad for the harrowing poverty and hopelessness of the people in the Philippines, as well as other third-world countries. Every year millions of young people graduate from schools without hope of getting decent employment. It has to be very demoralizing for them and their parents.

Most US universities' are & the budgets are funded by the Department of Defense for making or refining some weapons. Have not seen too many good successes coming out of US Universities. The are&the money are just perks for schools to keep well-known professors. Some of the abuses of are & the funds are just unethical.

I think any country should identify and prioritize their unique needs, then educate people for the skills needed, and fund any are & the that may produce tangible benefits.

I think universities should focus on training their students with basic skills in their fields to be competent in their jobs. Equally important is to train them with critical thinking, learning, problem solving and team work skills, also scientific curiosity and integrity coupled with a social conscience and sense of civic responsibility, so that they can add values to society.

Countries should learn how China managed to make vast improvements in most fields and elevate the population out of poverty and the country out of historical humiliation in a scant 20 years. There is no need for reinvention. Try to learn a few objective lessons and the methods from the Chinese, and may be try to do better.

First thing, learn to cook better, tastier seafood and meats and keep the restaurants nice, clean, pleasant and happy. Also teach the girls how to rid their heads and their homes of all head lice and body lice. I am dead serious about those few mundane but very important issues.

They do it for their field unless the students are at the doctoral level. Most undergrads are not reading the professor's pubs. It is too far above their heads.

In the US, universities are & the funds are usually granted by the government, mostly by Department of Defense. Research funds are pork-barrel incentives to keep well-known, reputable, famous professors to stay in the school and write more proposals to bring in even more research funds. US industries employ their own technical talents, and with needs to protect their trade secrets and profit, rarely employ school for research and development work.

Have not seen too many significant break troughs coming out of Universities' research.

To me the brightest minds of any country are the most precious resources and should be focused on the biggest and most difficult problems they are facing. Are & the should be aimed to produce advanced and innovative solutions to proven needs, with potentials for large paybacks.

Perhaps other countries can learn the China's model of development. The undergraduates are expected to know only 5,000 Mandarin words. It's amazing how China made so much progress in every field in the last 20 years. Pinays and pinoys should get in very close with the Chinese to learn their secrets.

I take issue as well over "the evidence" that you cite. The fact is that the huge majority of OFWs are unskilled domestic workers or construction laborers, and it's only a small percentage who qualify fully as nurses or other technical specialties, came many, if not most of those must undertake additional study to qualify in their destination countries. Remember too that we are talking about a country in which approximately 5% of the population has four-year degrees from any institution.

Indeed, the objective of the post was to get people to THINK before getting married to a bar girl, that is all. Hopefully some who spend the time reading it properly will benefit from it.

A few points:

1) The post has nothing to do with comparing degrees in the Philippines with other countries. Please focus on the content of the post which was comparing bar girls with girls who have striven, often at great relative expense and effort to themselves, to gain a qualification.

2) MadisonGuy: Please reread my post: I stated that MOST, not ALL bar girls had Filipino boyfriends.

Of course one can always find exceptions to any human endeavor.

This is amusing, but sadly true. I have to admit I do the same thing. Browse thru my FB or other profiles and you won't find a picture of the person who took my picture on that beach. I'm guessing my Filipina friends are also rolling their eyes. Just as we do when we see their poorly covered tracks. FB has made it easier to set up privacy curtains, but that also sends a message. Even as a "FB friend", I sometimes don't have access to the friend list of some women that I've spent quality time with.

Let me describe the FB page that most disturbed me. I friended the younger sis of a p4 p gal that I had known for years. I never met the younger sis, but she had a hot bikini pic on her profile. The profile said, "engaged". She was friendly and frank. Of course I only communicated by the private message function. I gave her some tips about multicultural relationships. With the caveat that I my advice might not be the best since I have an Asian ex-wife. I wasn't hitting on her. I even considered the possibility that fiancé was monitoring her private messages. I kept everything very G-rated.

As much as I envied the fiancé, he was not in any pictures. As Huts has already described, the Borocay holiday, the expensive phone, the bikini pictures taken in apparent isolation were all evident.

At some point the she announced that the visa was approved. Hooray! All the girlfriends piled on with messages such as, "good luck going overseas!" "I envy you" "we're going to miss you" blah, blah, blah.

And then it hit me. Not one person made any reference to the marriage or to the guy. Don't be "That Guy".
