Stopped by Sanchong around 1:30am early Saturday. My only previous trip was to the shack area just under the ChungHsiao Bridge. This time I made it over to the TongAn Park area.
Not being familiar with the area, I walked a circuit immediately around the park. There was a cop standing smack in the middle of the park, but I got the sense there is always a cop there 'cause the touts took only nominal notice of him. Taipei CAESARWORLD SAUNA (Asiaworld Shopping Mall)
i've been a long-time lurker but this thread has inspired me to register and post. i know that caesar's has been written about considerably, but i wanted to share my (complete) review and opinion. if you find it too long, you can skip directly to the next article.

by the way, the asiaworld mall is definitely alive and thriving. i can understand why some people think it no longer exists. its not listed on the english tourist maps! closest mrt stop is nanjing east road. just head 1 block east on nanjing rd.
to get to caesar's, enter the asiaworld mall and proceed directly to the elevators (escalators only go to the 7th floor). hit the button marked 15 and get off at your stop. at the top is the entrance to caesar's (no other establishments are there). caesar's actually occupies the 15th and 16th floors (although i suspect it may go even higher), the 16th being where the special massages are held. the official name (from their business card) is taipei caesarworld sauna and their phone number is (02) 2712-9999.
if you've never been to an asian sauna, you're in for a treat. but i warn you, it's not for shy guys. when you arrive, they will give you a wristband with a number on it. this number is used to track everything that you do/spend while at caesar's. no need to sign for anything. you'll be promptly directed to chairs to the right of the entrance where you must remove your shoes and socks before entering the inner sanctum. give your shoes to the attendant and when you leave, they'll be returned to you in almost new condition (i swear he got my cheap leather loafers looking like they were patent leather. what a shine! ) next time i go i'm taking my sneakers to see what he does with them. the shoe-shine is free by the way.
from there another person guides you to your assigned locker (same number that's on your wristband). there are two locks on the door and it takes your key (attached to the wristband) and that of the attendant to open the door. i'm sure it's their way to ensure you don't somehow sneak out without paying. at your locker, you strip down to your birthday suit (naked as the day you were born). if you're a secret shaver then everyone will soon know it! it's a bit of a maze in the locker area but try to proceed toward the right as you head back toward the attendant (i got a little lost finding the exit when leaving). you'll then enter the sauna area.

the "sauna" area is made up of the following:
- toilets to the right (of course). please don't number 1 in the pools.
- sinks (for shaving) just past the toilets on the right
- seated showering area in front of the toilet rooms and sinks
- back rub area (one table that was deserted when i was there)
- steam rooms to the left of the entrance (there seemed to be two of them but they might be a bit different)
- dry sauna to the left of the entrance past the steam rooms
- cool pool in the middle (water is still. no whirlpool)
- hot whirlpool area on the left side (next to the sauna)
- cool whirlpool/fountain area directly ahead of the entrance (past the cool pool). it's huge and you can't miss it.
- towel/dressing area (between the steam room and sauna). which is also the entrance to the relaxation room (which isn't easy to notice)
i thoroughly enjoyed the sauna experience. if this is typical of asia, then gentlemen, you guys are defining what true civilization should be. i admit i was quite uncomfortable at first. i walked from the lockers to the sauna room with my towel in front of my dick because i wasn't comfortable walking around with little johnny so exposed in a group of men. i went straight to the shower area (which affords a little privacy, but not much) to clean up before going into the pools. this shower is mandatory. not a good idea to go straight into the pools as they are not chlorinated. clean up before hitting the pools.
from there i went into the dry sauna (i don't like steam rooms) where i sat for about 10 minutes. there is a 32" tv in the sauna room with volume so it's not like you're busy trying to avoid looking at the other guys in the room. the floor of the sauna is actually carpeted which i found strange but welcome. no idea how they keep it clean but it felt clean under my bare feet and there was no smell of mildew in the room. there is a lot of dry skin on the floor next to the wooden benches where guys are cleaning the dry skin on their heels. no big deal.

in general i found the sauna area to be relatively clean. there is water everywhere but i didn't find the floor to be moldy or sticky or anything like that. i once stayed at a hostel in rome where the showers were so bad i decided to take my shower with my sneakers on (i had to buy new shoes). believe me, this place is clean. i did notice that there were a few men smoking in the sauna room which i found weird but tolerable.

it is itemized but if you can't read chinese it might as well be written in sanscrit. they do accept amex, mastercard and visa but i thought cash was the best way to pay. i don't think it's a good idea to use a credit card for such an establishment even if you think you can trust them. bring enough cash with you to cover any extras you might want to try while you're there. the mamasan will give you prices for everything so you can keep a running total in your head.
i hope this review is helpful, especially for you first-time foreigners. i'm heading to hong kong for a few days so i'll be looking through the forums for good advice there as well. i have to admit that the price here in taipei is steep but i thoroughly enjoyed it. still, i'm a cheap bastard so i'm looking forward to see how far i can stretch my hong kong dollars.
