I have legal residency here in Colombia but if it were not for being able to travel regularly to the DR and back to the USA I would probably have to choose to live in the USA, I don't think that I could live here full time. There are too many things that a person takes for granted while living in the USA That you will miss if living full time in a third world country. Don't get me wrong, I love it here and that's why I made the move but after about a month I need a change of scenery, maybe that will change with time as I haven't been here long.

What does the USA have to offer?

Reliable infrastructure and proper lines of communication to deal with problems for instance, your cable service has an issue, good luck trying to get someone to accurately tell you when they will come and fix it. I hear people complain about waiting 4 hours in the USA for the cable guy to show up, hahaha, try waiting for a week.

Not waiting for an hour in line at a bank to pay utility bills I pay all my bills online, impossible in Colombia.

Online banking, never having to go to the bank in person, trying to get ANYTHING accomplished at a bank in Colombia requires a full day's commitment of going in person.

Quality electronics, not paying top dollar for imported goods such as quality electronics, if you can get them at all, they are mostly "seconds" at first quality prices. And forget about warranties, that's a joke.

Better food overall. Colombia has plenty of fresh produce at low prices but if you want quality beef or seafood you will pay through the ass for it and you better know how and where to get it. I am learning how to age my own beef because generally Colombian beef is very lean and hence well, just sucks.

Enforced traffic laws, when it comes to driving (I don't) or riding in a car or taxi or bus or god forbid on a moto it is the wild, wild, west in Colombia. Stop signs and traffic lights are a mere suggestion. I can't count how many dead bodies I've seen.

Overall safety in regards to petty theft, I feel comfortable 99% of the time but there are certain rules that you must play by here in Colombia and sooner or later every body gets robbed, locals included, I don't know anybody here that HASN't been robbed at least once.

Ease of renting long term property. In Colombia you are required to have two fiadors or guarantors and even then if you are a foreigner they usually won't rent to you. I found a place but my point is that it is much more difficult for us gringos.

Honest contractors,99% of Colombian contractors will pork you in the butt if you don't know how to deal with them.

Quality workmanship, combine that with what I wrote above and you better know what you are doing or have been blessed with a good honest contractor.

Why live in Colombia then?

The women, duh.

The people in general are much more kind, considerate and friendly.

Lack of stress, clocks are not important, nobody gets wigged out if you are an hour late which is SOP here. This is number one for me, such a laid back lifestyle.

Cost of living (if you live outside the big cities otherwise it's not any cheaper).

The weather. Being near the equator you can literally choose your climate as there are no seasons to speak of, the temperature is pretty much the same year round, it's all about elevation, smart people shop for real estate using an altimeter.

I think as time goes by I will miss the USA Less and less but I will have a place to crash in the USA For the foreseeable future.

If it were not for the hot weather I probably would have tried living in the DR, I just got back from there on Wednesday and it was hot as fuck, I can only handle it for 5-7 days at a time. I have been going to the DR on a very regular basis for ten years, I have a lot of friends there both with and without benefits. I don't know of any place in the western hemisphere that can compete with the DR for price, safety, ease of travel and great sex from the girls.

Cuba not easy to travel to, Rio expensive and far, Panama expensive girls and they're mostly Colombians and Dominicans, Costa Rica mostly Colombians and Dominicans and just plain sucks, El Salvador ugly girls and some safety concerns. Haiti would be on my radar big time if I spoke the language but I don't,it has huge potential despite it's problems.

I don't live in Medellin, I live in a small city outside of Manizales, not a big fan of the big cities.

Social media and dating sites are the way to meet girls outside the big cities.

I just don't like anything about Costa Rica, and the girls are just too business like, I like to hang out and party with a girl before and after the deed. Mongering for me is a social interaction in addition to sex. I know that's not for everyone but for me it is.

When you sit down and do the research you will realize that more things come into play when moving abroad than you would think. Unless you are willing to live in a suitcase and leave the country every few months for a visa run you must go through the legalized visa process and it ain't pretty. Would you really want to disclose your financial information to a colombian bank or a bank in the DR? How would you get your medicines not available in your host country ? I looked that up for Peru and I would have had to go to the national department of health and then the customs broker to get approval. There are so many other things to consider it would be tedious to list them all.

I think it makes sense for guys to keep a US address (ie. credit rating). It is useful for many reasons. Otherwise I'd like to find somewhere that I'd like to spend 6 months out of the year but I haven't found it yet. If I did I could probably save a lot of my mongering budget by getting a discount on a long term rental.


There is nothing wrong with Amercia. It's got great potential but people and govt like to F it up. It's mainly the Govt these days but that's a different subject. Give me the USA of the 70's and 80's and I'd be a patriot once again.

No need to do business with a Colombian bank if you don't want to other than paying certain bills, and actually without a visa you will have a tough time opening an account so no need to bother, just keep your money in a USA Bank and withdraw as needed.

If you have a visa you can and must obtain health insurance here and it is dirt cheap, then you can get whatever prescriptions you need. I've never heard of anyone not being able to get a particular medicine here. If you are living here part time six months a year on a tourist stamp 60 or 90 days at a time just bring the meds with you from the USA Remember that you can get most meds without a prescription here, only narcotics require a prescription. I am fortunate in that I have my health for now, I'm about to turn 57 and am not on any meds at all.

In my opinion the USA is still the greatest country in the world and has less problems than any country but like I said, that's my opinion.

I would love to be able to eliminate my physical USA Residence because of the cost, I am paying property tax and insurance on a place that I don't spend a hell of a lot of time at but I'm not quite ready for that yet. I will always keep my bank and investment accounts in the USA And a USA Address. There are companies that will give you an address and either forward all your mail to Colombia on a monthly or bi monthly basis or they will scan it al for you and you can tell them to throw most or all of it away after you look at it online.

Artisttyp, I spend my days right now looking for a small finca (farm) to purchase. I have always raised a few animals and had a vegetable garden so that is my plan, maybe a small working farm with coffee and avocado. My other hobby is fishing, I haven't gotten my fishing equipment here yet though, I don't think there is any good fishing here anyway but we'll see. I also have been going back to the gym again. And of course spending time online looking for new "talent".
