I agree with what you said about quality of life stuff, but your financial assessment is a bit iffy. We have multi-billionaire mining magnates and corporate CEOs, millions of struggling working class folks, and tens of thousands of people living in abject poverty (especially if you include rural/regional areas and Aboriginal communities).
Australia is a very egalitarian society and in an 'emotional' sense, there is a degree of equality between rich and poor. But in a financial sense, the divide is massive. There is also a huge disparity between male and female wages, and award wages in different states. Underemployment is also a major issue.
I wonder how the male/female wage disparity compares with the US. I think the figure I heard there was that women make 73% of what men make. A few reasons besides prejudice can partially explain this.
1) Women tend to gravitate to "helping" professions and these often don't pay well; I know, since I am in a "helping" profession.
2) Career interruption to have kids. Of course now in the US there is the Family Medical and Leave Act and the man can take time off too. However, men are extremely poor at lactating and you can only take I think it is 12 weeks, and it's unpaid.
3) Flame me, shoot me, whatever, but women take more sick leave (at least in the US; 3/2 is the ratio I have heard) and employers don't like that.
I have not missed a day of work sick since 1993 and that day I was actually hung over and not sick, plus I didn't like that job and knew I would be quitting soon anyway. If I thought back to the last day I was actually to sick (injured, actually) to work we are talking 1989.
I once had an employee call in with what he referred to as "anal glaucoma"; he said he "just couldn't see his ass coming to work today." I also once had a job where if you were sick there was a number you had to call in the morning, I did this, and said I was ill, and was told I had to name an illness. I thought that was way stupid so I said I had Dutch Elm disease, and I never heard anything more about it.
However, as my trainer at the post office told me, "Never waste your sick leave when you aren't feeling well."

Australia looks unequal compared to Western Europe though, particularly Germany and Scandinavian countries.

Nationally, women are paid 17% less than men. Western Australia is much worse than the other states, with women here earning 26% less.
I agree with all your reasons. 1) Pay rates in caring professions and other jobs traditionally seen as 'women's work' are a joke. 2) The career interruption to give birth - and often returning to part-time or casual work for subsequent years - does long-term damage to a woman's promotion potential. 3) I would suspect that a lot of those sick days are actually taken when the kids are sick, or for school activities, kids' sporting events, etc. Also, the pressure involved with being a working mother (working all day at work, then working all night at home) can take a massive toll on women's health.
But I think the main problem is often straight out sexism, with women just being passed over for jobs in favour of men. Women with children are seen as a liability, women with no children are seen as a potential liability.

Well, I am an accountant by profession so I would certainly characterize children as a liability (future sacrifice of resources) on the balance sheet and an expense (current consumption of resources) on the income statement.
I can't see them being an asset, which implies a future benefit, and they don't seem to produce much revenue (net inflow of resources), generally. Hence they decrease equity. Also, they are messy and sticky and stinky.

I gave up on "Love American Style" during the Reagan years. Part of it was working in the Federal government, and an agency where white males were indeed targets of discrimination; part of it was that I'd bought a house and took my widowed mother in to live with me, and what woman would put up with that?
