So I was thinking about San Jose for a few days and then Jaco for the week of Easter. I know its not the best but it fits in with my schedule. Do the ladies leave the entire week of Easter starting Monday, from SJ and Jaco or just closer to actual Easter Sunday, say Friday as an example? Do they all leave or is it just that there are fewer? After dozens and dozens of trips to every area of CR. I moved my tack to Colombia for the last 10 years so I can't speak of the current situation in CR but S. S. Jaco will be leaner than SJ. IME, most of the SJ chicas are local to the area. You won't have the crowds that you're used to, but you should still be able to find someone. Babies still have to eat even if it's Semana Santa.

Appreciate Nomars777's report but the week between Christmas and New Years day and Easter weekend are the absolute worst times to visit San Jose from a mongering perspective. The great majority of the ladies simply check out to spend time with family and friends and the scene during these periods is simply not generalizable. Having said this, I personally think CR is now an average mongering destination at best and an overpriced shadow of what it once was. The demise of the Del Rey / Blue Marlin bar and places like Zona Blue when it was run by Eddie and Bar Idem and Club Kamur have been devastating.

Went on my first ever mongering trip to CR.

Landed in San Jose on Wednesday afternoon. Immigration was done in 40 minutes and was out of the airport. Took little more than an hours to reach Taormina. Though people in reception don't speak good English check in was smooth. Took a shower and came down to see the talent. There were probably 20 girls around 6 PM. I came here with family during the break between Christmas and New Year, so I had limited time to venture out on my own for this, but I managed to check things out briefly.

Bottom line. San Jose not a winner in my book and I would not repeat, not when there are just so many other high quality options that are cheaper, better and with far, far, far hotter girls. I ran into so many guys there who were like "oh my god, this is paradise!" and honestly, I just don't see it. The girls are average, at best, mechanical or dead eyed and coked up, old, flabby and just not anywhere worth $100 USD. I don't get it, I truly don't. But, as the saying goes, to each their own. Nice, honest, heartfelt report. Although, you didn't exactly pick the best time to go mongering in Costa Rica. Probably would have been a little better at another time of the year. OK, sorry but not sorry for this rant because I feel like it has to be said:

San Jose is just not that great. It really isn't. And I do not understand how anyone could rate it as "the greatest mongering destination known to man" or whatever hyperbole has been posted. I can tick off 6 or 8 places I would go first before going back to San Jose. That out of the way, here are the details.

I had the week of New Year's off from work and would normally have gone to Colombia, but tickets were pricey and this was the case for other preferred destinations as well. I looked into San Jose and tickets were reasonable, especially using points, so I booked a trip. Haven't visited SJO for chicas ever, but was familiar with it from stumbling into the old Del Rey back in 2005 while on a Central American motorcycle trip.

Got a room at La Amistad, just down the block from Sportsmens Lodge, which was very convenient.

General SJO Observations:

1) New Year's Eve / Day. SJO is a ghost town, like waiting for tumbleweeds to roll by type of ghost town. Absolutely nothing going on, primarily due to all the Ticos going to the beach. That's fine, Sportsmens still has TVs to watch college football and a *few* chicas, so all good.

2) Taormina was also the-E-the dead and very little going on until the 2nd / 3rd of January, which was also fine as they too have TVs to watch the bowl games and food that was more than passable.

3) Chica quality. Completely subjective opinion, but honestly I DO NOT understand how anyone can consider these chicas as smoking hot, especially in comparison to Medellin, Bogota, Cartagena or Habana. Nearly all the chicas in Sportsmens were 30+ and several 40+. They nearly all had the standard Tica / Nica square ass shape, which is fine I guess, but I prefer my chicas to be curvy, sexy, fun and flirtatious and very few of these girls had even 1 of those attributes. Most were old, flabby, and just not that attractive in my opinion.

4) Chica deliverables. Likely due to their age, these girls have been around the block more than 100 times. They know the game, know that the majority of their clientele coming down are much older gentlemen who just want some female attention and thus they tailor their offerings. Sad, sad, sad. Nearly all turned down BBBJ, period. Of the 8 I went with over a 4 day period, 2 sucked the dick raw compared to 100% in Medellin, 100% in Bogota, 100% in Cartagena and 100% in Habana. These girls are deranged. But given the general clientele of very older men, perhaps that's why they think they're hot shit. They haven't had anyone tell them they are not.

6) Sportsmens is cool. Bartenders Angie, Diana and Georgina (I think) are all attractive, flirtatious, good conversation and make a great mixed drink. Good fun just chatting with them. Food was surprisingly good. I had the menu ejecutivo twice, and the soup was spectacular on both occasions (cream of asparagus one day, cream of pumpkin another). Pizza crust beautifully crispy and toppings also good. Arroz con pollo (chicken and rice was excellent). Even better were the guys I met there. Pretty much solid dudes from the US and Europe, buying rounds, shooting the shit, hanging out, telling stories, honestly the absolute best part of the trip, hands down.

7) Taormina. Also cool but loud and crowded with just far too much noise to easily communicate unless I dragged a girl out to the lobby / casino entrance area to chat / negotiate. Drink prices were reasonable, as at Sportsmens, and it was a good time just watching the chicas move through the sports bar. Didn't go to Jungle because it was closed two days and on 2 other days it had very few girls in it, so no real viewpoint on it. Loved getting a table in the middle of the sports bar with the guys I met from Sportsmen's and just taking in the scenery.

8) Bar Little Havana. Like a mini version of Taormina or Sportsmens. Have TVs playing YouTube music videos, primarily whatever the bartender and owner / manager want to play. The drinks were good and reasonably priced and the soap de pollo was very good. Between 4-5 girls in attendance, only 2 of which were under 35 from what I could tell and they were the only two I would consider taking to the room, one of which I did.

9) Tinder. Kinda worth it, could be really worth it with some effort. Got a TON of matches, ended up seeing 4 from Tinder, 2 of which I ALSO saw in Taormina, which was funny and we had a good laugh together on that. Similar pricing $100 for an hour, covered service, came to Amistad, etc. If I was going to be in SJO for more than a week, I think I'the stick to Tinder only as it's the only place to find girls 20-25 that weren't fat and / or unattractive, with minor exceptions, in the bars.

Finally #10) Stuck in the 80's. Now, don't take this the wrong way, but GODDAMN people, LET THE 80's GOOOOOOO. Jesus Christ, nearly every place had some version of a classic rock playlist on an infinite loop, complete with Journey, the Police, Foreigner, Queen and whatever other 80's band you want to mention. I mean, seriously, this was 40+ years ago. If that was your golden age, I guess, but man can we just stop re-living that decade!? Please? Por favor?

I'm guessing this has to do with the fact that most all the dudes I saw in these places, white guys anyway, were in their very late 50's to late 70's and granted, the 80's probably was their golden decade. And on a related note, in all of these places I also heard on an infinite loop some version of the ex-pat monger story. Worked in some fancy job or has some self-employed business or has real estate investments, goddamn kids are stupid and greedy and lazy these days, I make or have this much money, yadda, yadda yadda. All good, I guess. But wow, I do understand how people who work or have to deal with us in a tourist business in SJO would get real bored, real fast. Same music, same stories, same people saying the same things over and over and over again. It's like the putas for sale version of Groundhog Day.

Anyway, rant over, for now.

I was there middle of the month from W-to Sunday. It is weird to stay at Taormina. There is an increase of Indian tourists just waiting for girls to arrive from 6-8 pm when there are slim pickings. Near the elevators there are two sofas and one dude sits on one end, while the other sits on other end so 4 dudes total while a few more are just standing near the elevators playing with their phones while waiting for chicks to arrive. They are for two hours and cost $50. Works if you are not staying at Taormina and don't want to take the girl back to your own Airbnb or hotel.

The price should be only $50.

I rented a room short term the next few nights and it was only $50. That's what I paid in the past too.

Only once I was charged $60 and it was by a woman at the front desk who I had not seen before and who had a bad attitude. I think she intentionally overcharged me.

If they try to charge me $60 again, I will just skip renting the room and tell the girl why she's losing out on a payday.
