Also a bit North on the opposite side of the road is a truck repair shop, at least that's what it looks like to me, it could be a contracter's yard.

So, like a bunch of other people, I was affected by the problems at the airports last week. Unlike a lot of other people who were stuck in Thailand trying to go out, my problem was getting back home in Bangkok from Vietnam.

Upon arrival in vientiane, some crazy american advises me to make my way immediately to nong khai and stake out for a seat in a train or bus, as everything would be fully booked to Monday. He further told me to run to the border straight away as it closes at 6PM. Somehow made it there at 6:30, and indeed the place looked dark and almost deserted, but I was still ushered through along with a bus-full of korean tourists.

So I hailed one of the taxi touts, and decided to first have a look at the train station. Surprise, the evening train was still there, and even had some seats available, but only in 3rd class. I gave it a miss and booked a sleeper couch for the next day, without problem. Asked if there was any rush, the station guy told me I was one of the first to reserve a seat for that train. Alarmist American, to this day, I hate your gut.

Next to the interesting stuff, as I instructed my taxi guy to take me to the nearest motel. That was to be the Pantawee hotel, a sprawling establishment in the center of town. There too, the staff was a bit hurried but plenty of rooms available (damage so far: 600b + 100 to taxi). Room was small but clean. The friendly manager enquired if I needed anything more, "drink? Room service? Beautiful lady? " and I told him I'd definitely make use of the latter but needed to shower and dine first. Shower was at best barely lukewarm. I lazed out a bit and by the time I was finished and had and a few phone calls and beers, it was close to 9:30 and the town was looking positively dead. That's when I noticed it had gotten really damn chilly. I had packed only light shirts for Vietnam, and the open air ride in the tuc tuc drove me in a deep state of hypothermia. It took us 10 minutes to get to the nondescript building which was our destination, and by that time I had turned an interesting shade of blue. I had to steel myself to keep my dignity, and couldn't trust my teeth and jaw so kept my mouth firmly shut, with a frozen grin.

Driving through Roi-Et recently I took an afternoon's respite at Mai-Tai hotel's soapy. This place is a bit hidden up the stairs - they seem to have to avoid advertising its existence in the current prudish climate. But it is still there, still in operation, after all these years, up the steep stairwell on the second floor. A few decent looking early-twenties types, priced at 1,700, some good looking older women around 30 or even older priced at 1,500, and some untempting ones at 1,200. Services were standard, with a perfunctory BBBJ; I even had to don a condom for a while, though happily I eventually talked her out of it and had some real sex and a creampie finish. Obviously these kind of places are a very poor deal pricewise, but I was flush at the time. Oh well.

I wanted to find out if there were any small houses ('song'), but my travelling companions must press on. I asked a few tuktuks about this and they claimed there were none, though one said that I should try going to some of the bungaloes outside town.

On a non-mongering note, this pleasant town (which is situated on a lovely man made lake) boasts what is said to be 'Isaan's first Indian restaurnt'. Delicious food, just half a block from the downtown shopping mall - 'Roi-Et City Plaza'. Comically, my colleagues just watched me eat and then dined later upon food from the market just down the street. (Thais notoriously dislike all things Indian, and most certainly Indian cuisine). I do have to admit it is one of the nicest markets I have encountered in a small Isaan city.

Stopped to sleep in the next town, Maha Sarakham. We looked around the soi that used to have two or three little brothels, and while there were a few girls sort of loitering around I think you have to take them elsewhere as the buildings appeared to be knocked down. (as you depart Takasila Hotel go left and then another left at the first soi) Prices were still bargainable to 500 baht though 1,000 was initially quoted as seems to be standard in such sois (see my Khon Kaen reports). Mediocre quality. The girls said the police were cracking down a lot lately.

Asked from a motorbike taxi opposite the opening of this soi and he called a girl on the phone who showed up on a motorbike - a quite cute one around 20-23. Off to a short time hotel, after bargaining to 600 baht from initial 1,000. Bareback was had without complaint, and though only the most amatuerish blow job the sex was fairly intimate.

The old lady houses downtown next to the market were reduced from one to two, and only two very ugly and one good looking old lady remained 300 for the former and 500 for the latter, so I didn't try. This house looks like an old rooming house, and is on the side of the market farthest from the clocktower roundabout.

Another of our mongering team decided to take the hotel bellman up on the offer of a 'college girl' available by telephone. This was priced at 1,500, but it might very well be more for a non-Thai. I was not present to see the girl but I was told she was a looker, though not a performer.

On the way out of town the next evening we stopped at a large kareoke - on the highway on the way to Kalasin. There were two or three very cute girls here, several mediocre ones, and a few that weren't even girls! We feared the cute ones might have just been there for a sort of teaser but I was rented one for 1,000 baht short time. Just one note about this style of place - I was travelling with Thais, and these kareokes may be difficult to navigate unless you are very fluent and can blend in. I almost forgot to share my recent trip to Udon's brothels with my mongering brothers.

I made a flying visit there with a full saloon-load of Thai acquaintances, and we found the two main sois mostly open, with a fair selection of girls. Quality was excellent in Soi Two and better than the last time I visted in Soi Sow Fie Dang. Prices remain 300 in the latter, and 400 in the former, but this time I tried out the 'special' house just off of Soi two on the small sub-soi to the left.

This is the house that the Thai middle class guys always seem to prefer, and it is priced at 600 baht Thai or farang. The selection here is really large - perhaps 30 girls, and the rooms are very nice and clean, with decent bathrooms ensuite and air conditioning.

I allowed the older man who seems to run the place to suggest one for me, as I requested the ability to 'moke' (smoke, or suck dick). Alas not all girls provide this service. He choose a cute and frisky one, but alas being short and a bit curvy not really my type. Still, service was much better than average for Issan, with a decent BJ and bareback available, though only with a bit argument and coaxing. My last day in Si Saket I stopped by the short time hote at around two PM. At that price he insisted I pay the 60 baht short time room charge (by the way a full night in this place is just 120 - I've stayed there in years past and it is lovely, with high ceilings).

I then went to the short time hotel to the left of the roundabout mentioned last night (just walk away from the station through the roundabout/square, and then left at the first street, and find the old short time hotel on the right a few hundred feet down).

I saw there three girls, happily none of them the same as the previous night. Two were quite attractive and young, and one not so attractive. All seemed to obviously dread associations with farang. The old hotelier/pimp offered the cuter ones to me for 1,000 baht, which I countered with 500. At that price he offered the unattractive one, and countered with 700 for the cuter ones. I'm sure Freeler will disapprove, but I agreed - after all there are so very few options in this town that it is a seller's market. Hard to believe one such as that can be setting terms, but I suppose that is where we are in Si Saket 2008.

It's easier to see the name of this Soi when coming from Meechai Road (in fact, it's really near the "what Sri Boon Ruang" temple). But you will more likely find the Soi itself coming from Prajak as it is a small (dark at night) street that is located very near a PTT (Por Tor Thor) gas station, on the other side of Prajak road, between Prasai and Phochai roads (Prasai road is a very small one, but Phochai is larger and you can't miss it IMHO).

If you come from Prajak road, you will notice a sort of arch with an inscription in Thai at the entrance of the soi and the brothel will be on the left side of this small street, at around 15-20 meters from the entrance. If you come from Meechai road, it's then on the right side of the street, at approximately 35-40 meters from the panel indicating the name of this street.

You will certainly notice a few girls waiting in front of the brothel if you go there after 8pm (or later), but there are usually others already inside too.

They charge 300 baht for half an hour (but they are not too pushy and it's usually OK to stay 45 minutes for this price) and 500 baht for one hour (approximately again, and I suppose that you can spend up to 90 minutes with the lady of your choice then).
