Posts: 106Airport Update - Dar es Salaam
Arrived last night -.
1. Long line for rapid antigen arrival tests. Cost 10 USD. I bypassed line because I was on list of countries whose FULLY VACCINATED (with proof) citizens do not require new test.
2. Obtained Visa on Arrival.
- First booth did document check, system entries, produced "invoice".
- Second window for Visa Payment - 100 USD for Americans, 50 USD for all others. And you can pay using credit card (I used Visa card). Woman did not ask me to sign credit card receipt. Sent me on to Immigrtion officer.
- Third booth. Immigration - Normal passport control. He had me sign credit card receipt from Window 2.
All in all. From airplane to luggage claim - 25 minutes at 0300 in morning. 2, maybe 3 flights, arriving during period.
Free WiFi at airport. Works great. Inside. I connected, fired up Bolt, ordered ride. Stepped outside to wait. NO INTERNET! Literally 2 meters from door. Went back inside, reonnected. Stayed there until driver announced arrival. Met at Parking Payments building across street from terminal.

A little boy was there as usual with his wooden box to shine the shoes. But while talking with him I noticed some things marked on the sides. He told me these are the prices. On one side there was 20 (I don't remember the exact amount in CFA at the time), on the other 50 and on the third 100.
And he explained to me, the first one is for the toubabs, the second one for the tourists, and the third one then?
For the Americans!
It's Africa, boss!

Posts: 153I'm sorry if you already answered this in some other post, but what is your appearance, race, and age? Do you think there would be very different results in Arusha and Dar for a guy based on these factors?
Also, thank you for a great and inspirational trip report

1. Avoid remote beaches 2. Never walk with a backpack. Not in town, not on a beach! It means asking for trouble. Thugs always expect at least an expensive notebook or smartphone inside 3. Carry nothing more than a simple plastic bag when walking a beach.

2nd case.
You were lucky. That could have ended very bad for you. Just let go of that junk and run. Why resist for a worthless back pack. If the second guy hits you with a panga you're facing critical injury or death. Never walk on a deserted beach. Even in daytime. I always stay in guarded beach clubs or hotels let you in for a fee to use their swimming pool. In Mbezi beach that is.

Posts: 106Mchepuko Escorts / Zari Massage
A catalog of lovelies for Mchepuko across Tanzania. Is this "agency" a scam? (Looks too good to be true.) What about their associate Zari Massage? Says there are independent escorts but the phone number is strictly the central booking. Anyone have some background?

First one here: 649'05.8"S 3919'13.8"E. Three guys came to me. Told me there is a military base here, I am arrested and I need to go with them. Actually, it would not be a problem for me. But the thing is, it was still a simple beach. And only one of the guys had a khaki t-shirt. And they didn't look like soldiers at all. At first, I was trying to talk to them nicely. But after I heard a question whether I want to see my own blood, I told, OK guys, I call police, and they should decide who of us should be arrested. I started to dial any number, although I didn't know what number I need. When I looked around the guys were already quickly walking away from me. As far as I understand I had Luck that the beach was full of people. And the guys wanted to take me away from the beach. Now about the police. I didn't want to leave it like this. And went to the next police station. So I need to give respect to local police. 20 min later I was there with 4 guys with AK-47. They refused to go exactly to that place. Because it was the border of the military base. And they were in civil clothes and with assault rifles. But in each case they tried to help me.
Second case here: 639'38.4"S 3913'01.2"E. This time I was not so lucky. I was alone on the beach. I was simply walking there. Ten min before what had happened to me I saw a white family not so far from that place. A man, a wife and two small kids. So I saw two guys are coming straight to me. 10 m to me the guys pulled their t-shirts up and took something like machetes out. It was something self-made. Looked like a short sword. I had critical situations also before. You never think in such situations with your mind. It is only instincts. I had a pepper spray and started to spray on the first guy in 2 m distance. The wind was strong. So I could really hit him only when he was immediately on me. He managed to grab my t-shirt. But he was already almost blind. He tried to hit me with the knife. But I was moving all the time. And he hit only the air. Finally, I turned my back to him and tried to run away. But he grabbed my backpack. Do you remember the scene from "Avatar" movie, where the guy springs out of his backpack? I did the same. And started to run as fast as I can. As I was running, I shortly turned my heard to see what is happening behind. The second guy was running after me. It was a very nice view: a guy with a sword running behind me. But I was without anything and without shoes. And the guy was in his shoes and with a sword. Some 200 m later he dropped off. And run back to his partner. The first guy couldn't walk himself. Was trying to clean his eyes. The second guy helped him to run to the Bush. They didn't forget to grab my backpack. The backpack itself was the most expensive thing they got. There were only my old shoes inside and sanitizer. So I kept running till I reached this place: 639'14.5"S 3912'43.8"E. There was some security personal there. I run to him and explained the situation. He went immediately to telephone to call, as far as I understand local security boss. As I was waiting on that guy as I saw one of the thugs walking on the beach in the same direction where I run before. I don't know why. I didn't remember the faces of the thugs. But it was the same clothes, same age, same height. And as he saw me and saw that I am calling the security guy, he dropped something in the water. And as I was fighting with them there and as I was running back, the beach was empty. In each case it was one of the thugs. I called the security guy and we run together to the thug. I was pretty pissed and was keeping pepper spray at thug's face all the time. We took him to some building and called police. Local security chef also came. He told me it is a usual story. On weekend the thugs even make big operations. A dozen of them surrounds big groups of people. So that nobody can escape. And take everything they want. He was even pissed a little bit, that the first one who dared to resist and survived after it was a muzungu. The police was not so nice this time. The first guys who came, I had to pay the taxi for them and 20000 shilling each (all my valuables were in my pockets). After I came back to Europe they called me one time to tell about the case. But after it they stopped to answer my calls.

What do we know about this hotel in Dar es Salaam? The hotel looks nice, central location in city. Blah blah blah. Is it girl friendly? Anything to look for in the neighborhood? I appreciate any bits of info you might share.
