Yes, SouthEaster got it right here, and exactly what I was going to suggest. I would not go to Madagascar with less than 2 weeks and even that is pushing it, 3 to 4 weeks is best for a "short" trip. But that said, you can still do it in 10 days. Hit one place and don't try to travel around the country, that will only lead to frustration and stress. It also depends on where you are coming from. Jetlag can be a drag, but if your time zone change is only a couple hours, you likely will only have to deal with getting over a redeye flight on arrival. If there is 7+ hrs time change ontop of the flight time, then I tend to be useless for a day at least.

Fly directly into Nosy Be if you want the beach scene, and as much action as you can get, 1 or 2 girls a day is easy. And you will not be able to avoid the scammers with no experience, but don't give in to them when they ask 100 k+, give them 10 k for a taxi and send them out the door (or better yet, agree before the hotel). But you can find sweethearts that are honest, fair and very experienced sexually in Nosy Be, mostly on the beach or at Tatie Chris (on Sundays), and even in Ambotaloaka if you have good sense and choose wisely. 40/60 k is still doable in Nosy Be. And you don't have to spend 100 euro at a hotel, there are decent places for 40-60 euro a night.

I also avoid Tana these days, but I had a lot of fun there in the past when I often spent 4-7 days there in between travel to other places. The nightclub scene is fun, the restaurants are diverse and great, and there are girls from all over the country there. It has gotten much rougher and more dangerous though over the years, since the 2009 coup and again after the pandemic, but I kind of miss those early days.

If that's the case, then who are those mongers (from what countries) who will turn Madagascar into another Thailand? Not from the USA / Canada, for sure. Contrary to many posters here propagating the language of the snail eaters I've also had the same experience. Especially in tana. Hell before coming here first time I learned well over 100 hours of French and had B2 from the old school days as well. However trashed it all for the real local lingo just two weeks into the trip as I considered it useless. Malagasy has its own problems for example all parts for repairing car or motorbike are in French but its way more effective in general any time.

Maybe if you only seek out the more expensive segments of the market and or only stay in the city center youll be fine speaking french and French only. But what for? The snail eating expats mostly full time alcoholics anyways won't accept you unless you are one of them. Local gasy who learned French mostly did it with the motivation to leech off said speakers. Especially the prosies where BTW you won't have good access to the cheapest of skanks if you're into those LOL.

With the Malagasy very simple French is sufficient. Interspersed with some Malagasy. In practice I speak a mix. And as you say. Dialects are another matter. I speak Merina dialect. But you can make yourself understandable. Most can count in French. Specially the girls. But. Most educated Merina speak good French. And not all French expats are alcoholics. Depends who you mingle with. Buffet du Jardin for example.

If they're drinking alcohol smoke they're the hardest of hardcore you find in Ambataloaka. Geared towards the clueless overpaying monger. Malagasy as for the merina accent is underrated among this and other forums IMO. You can go to provinces and people will understand you but their answer with a different accent may be hard to understand. And if you make it to ambanivohitra youll be gucci. I've only ever visited Goringosa Beira and Maputo. Maputo super easy and cheap. Go to the main beach down town and visit the food market stalls. Amazing food and you will get approached. Not professionals but local girls enjoy meeting westerners. I've picked up girls there a few times and well worth it just glove it.

I have read about the dreadful roads and long distances, for which I would have no patience. I am planning to keep it simple -- Morondava (to see the famous trees and Kirindy forest park) for 2 days, followed by 4 days / nights at Nosy be. I was planning to dedicate an entire travel day for each change, as I hear that flights are unreliable. Tana does not interest me. I would fly into Tana, then leave the next day. At least for the prices I have seen, money will not be an issue.

I am a fairly experienced punter. Not decades and decades, but I've travelled and seen plenty, including all the major punting hotspots around the world. Madagascar is one of the last places on my bucket list, and a first in Africa. I like point and shoot, without having to be worry about getting scammed, squeezed, or drugged. I have no desire to hunt the streets looking for hidden gems, or LTR. I suspect that Taxi Be is for me.

I have generally avoided punting in Africa, though I have always been intrigued by Madagascar because of the reportedly much lower STD rates, and the exotic look of African with a bit of Asian. And I like slim with a pretty face. Great tits are appreciated but not required. NO thick booties.

My questions are:

1. Are the girls at Nosy Be generally clean / hygenic? You read about the poverty in Madagascar, and I don't want someone from a slum. No funny smells, especially down there. This was a problem for me in the DR. I want girls who are at least decently put together.

2. Recent punter's gut instinct on the risk of STDs? Look, I know the risks involved with our hobby. I do everything covered, with BBBJ on a case by case basis. A small risk I am ok with, but not extraordinary risk.
