I have been visiting Chennai for for several years (20+). In the good old days, long before the online referral, I have approached autorickshaw drivers parked near classy hotels. A few of them know where the action is and would be take to me the houses. As with anything it was a hit or miss. I wonder if such referrals still exist. I realize there is an element of risk involved but fortunately I never ran into any trouble in the past. These days, I myself rely on senior members of this forum for referrals and check out some MPs based on other members' reports.

On the same boat. Till Andriod phones arrived- auto drivers were the main and only Source.

Catch is. You have to pick the right person. Particularly in tier-2 cities they were the main Source.
