Villa Mimosa Tuesday night.

While this sounds right when I looked at the website for the NY consulate it said that they wouldn't accepts VISA applications by mail or send it back. That's why I used the Visa service since it doesn't pay for me to drop it off myself and pick it up a week later. I just did this recently so I'm wondering if they had an old page on their website.

I can only surmise that each consulate operates independently of the others and has its own rules. I had no problem getting my passport mailed back with the new visa inside from the Miami consulate. Better check the website for your appropriate consulate-or use a visa service. I've gotten good service from Passports Plus, although not for a Brazilian visa: http://www.passportsplus.com/

Have to agree. Each consulate operates differently. My comments were for Chicago, I should have specified. So depending on where you live, which consulate you have to use, the best practice will be different.

Gentlemen:

Visited MC Monte Carlo last night. It was mostly quiet. I arrived around 5pm. Drank a water and fended off a few early aggressive approaches. Settled on a nice woman named Vanessa. Before using a VISA service, check out the Brasil Consulate website for info. I have had 3 VISAs from Brasil over the years. You used to have to present your passport and application in person or use a service. About 3 years ago that changed. You can now fill out the application on line. You then file it on line, then print off a submission sheet, which has a space for your photo and it has a barcode preprinted. You send that in with your passport and you can follow the whole process online. Status dates are prompt, such as App Received, processing, approved, mailed to applicant. My turn around was 6 days, including weekend. (I know: Shocking compared to the normal Brasilian Red-Tape).

Since you use priority mail both ways, having included a prepaid US postal express mail envelope for return, it is very secure. All this is detailed on the websites. I believe a Passport / Visa service would be slower and cost more. The above is for US, not sure about the rest of the world.

Oh: and try posting your travel dates in the appropriate forum to meet up with someone to show you the ropes, or just to walk around Lapa together. A wing-man never hurts.

No visa will be processed by any kind of mail including USPS, Federal Express, DHL, etc. The Consulate cannot be held responsible for mailed passports or visa applications and will not mail applications or visas back.

About me. I travel a lot but have never been to Brazil. I usually do Colombia, not really a p4p mongerer but just a single male traveler that likes to get laid. I speak spanish and after studying portuguese and talking to Brazilians my spanish should be fine in brazil for my first trip.

1) Are there direct flights from Miami or any east coast city to Rio?

Here is my slightly different answer:

1) Yes Miami and New York for sure take a look at TAM the Brazilian airline.

2) They have a surfing beach in Arpoador, hangliding, sightseeing Christ Statue, Sugar Loaf, Futebol, shopping etc:

3) Apartments have gone up in price along with everything else but you should be able to get a nice apt for about $75 a day.

4) To get a visa using the mail use a visa service I use ZVS. COM it takes about a week and a half.

1) Emphatically yes! Nonstop flights are available from Miami, Atlanta, Washington Dulles, JFK, and Newark, perhaps others.

2) For a first time visit you can do the usual tourist things like Pao de Acucar and Corcovado, browse in some upscale (Sao Conrado) or midscale (Rio Sul) malls You can eat in any of several excellent restaurants, listen to forro in Lapa, and possible see a concert at Teatro Municipal. I'm sure other members will have other suggestions,

3) RTFF. There are a couple of threads devoted to this topic. See which ones are recommended and which to avoid. Contact the lessor directly for rates.

4) If you want to get your visa by mail, you must either use a visa service or find out which consulate area you live in; each consulate covers certain states. Go to that consulate's website and download the application form. Send them your passport with the application. 2 passport sized photos, a money order for the visa fee and return postage, and a return self-addressed Fedex or UPS mailer. I got my current visa by mail directly from the Miami consulate. My recollection is that it took about 2 weeks, but it's better to allow 3+ weeks.

Day Five.

I tried to change the pace a bit. I headed to Tijuca and the Saens Pena Metro stop. I agree with all those who had been down there. It is a truly middle class neighborhood. Think of Copacabana (IMHO, no flames) without the beach.

I found a lot of the cool spots described here: Tigressas Tijuacanas, Anne Massagens, etc, but ran into an old acquaintance at Mix Massagens. In addition you still have Villa Mimosa where you can have a session for less than $20 dollars (BR35). It is about to get ruined with the influx of guest to see the World Cup and the Olympics, so go before it becomes obscenely expensive.
