I used to visit Cuba semi regularly back in the late 1990's. The girls were off the hook and I always had a great time. I have followed the news over the years, and a bit more closely since Raul started to try to change a few things. I'd always thought if things changed enough maybe I could retire there (even though I'm a citizen of the USA). Well, I'm retired now, but my guess is that despite all the talk things haven't changed all that much. Particularly from the perspective of living there. Somebody tell me if I'm wrong. I'd love to hear that I'm mistaken. But, still shitty infrastructure, internet access is extremely poor and all the rest. Still tough, as I understand it, for an American to wrangle a way to live there legally.

I been to Cuba twice now and stayed for 3-4 months each time. You can buy a house for 5-10K and hire all kinds of helpers (servants) for 15-20 bucks per month. I'm down for that. Plus one of the most serious crimes that can be commited in Cuba is attacking an American, I know, I was robbed there and went thru the entire process of apprehension, court, imprisonment. But it has to be an American there illegally. They really admire Americans that run the Embargo. They figure you are part of the revolution. Unless your inside information is superior to mine, this was all Raul. As for 90% never returning, impossible. What does your 90% represent? The 2% that can afford to leave? Or the other small percent that cannot afford to leave, but, get invited to leave by marriage? Or the % of doctors and techs that have been leaving and returning in greater numbers than those that "defect" for several years now? I am confused. Most Cubans, especially the newly immigrated Cubans to the USA could give a shit about Cuban or Miami Cuban politics. They are simply seeking economic opportunity, not unlike the poor of other nations. They love the "motherland" notwithstanding its flaws. In fact, Miami politics has changed significantly because of these new Cubans such that most Cuban-Americans now support normalized relations with Cuba. Ja.
