Hi guys,

I'm on the Medellin board, but my first post of this board. I have a "regular girl" that I know from Medellin who is going on assignment for a month in Cali. She is staying with a friend. But she has invited me to visit her for the weekend on my next trip in two weeks. I'm most likely going to fly over there for 2 days and see her. I need to find a hotel. Normally I'd do the research on the board myself. But I'm real tight on time. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel in Cali. I do not need five start, but I want something decent. A pool and A / C would be nice. Close to bars and restaurants (whatever area in Cali is recommended) is a plus. Somewhere that a first time gringo in Cali would feel comfortable with a Paisa who has only been to Cali once.

Prefer to ask you guys rather than rely on the girls friend for advice. What do you think?

Go there. More silicone than you can shake a stick at. They have everything and it's close to Cali plaza.

Are you talking pros or non-pros? With pros, they don't care about your wealth, as long as you can pay their rate. You pick them up as is described in multiple posts on this forum.

With non-pros, your wealth will only impress them if you're on the ground for a long time. If you're a short-time visitor getting with non-pros will usually take youth, good looks, and some Spanish ability.

With either group, you could become a target very quickly if they know you're a rich guy. If you want to stay safe, don't let anyone think you're rich. It's generally smart to pay the poor / modest Gringo when in Latin America.

Just being foreign tourist is a sign of wealth to most Colombians. It is easy to stay safe if you apply common sense as in any where in the world. Never advertise your wealth or tell anyone that you are wealthy. Try not to advertise your wealth. Don't rent a mercedes or BMW. Don't do crazy things like walking around with a ring with a diamond on it or a Rolex. Don't pay everyone their meal because nobody is dying of hunger there even if they poor. Don't pay everyone their drinks whenever you meet new people or go out with someone new. Just try to blend in as much as you can and try to spend moderately instead of making extravagant expenses even if you can afford to spend. Don't hire security to protect you either because that is just advertising that you are wealthy. You will be safe as long as you stay in a decent neighborhood, go out during daylight and don't be walking around scare. If you are not comfortable walking alone, always go out with someone. Keep your mouth shut about you being rich. And have fun and enjoy the culture.
