New Life is still the same. The place next door is decent, but my favorite is around the corner at Delicias Naturales. Say Hello, to Juan if you go. There's some good places not far from McDonald's. Hacienda is good and a few other places just before the walking street hits Parque Bolivar.

I'm not from the streets. My high school was surrounded by corn fields. The closest McDonald's was 60 miles away. We didn't lock doors, or ever take keys out of the car. We didn't have crime. I never learned how the people from the streets move, but I learned how to walk through the pasture without stepping in cow shit.

I've still probably spent more time walking the streets of Medellin than most guys here. Not just the streets where the pussy is, the streets around the streets that are around the streets where the pussy is. You know those guys you see late at night, digging through the garbage? 1 takes metal, 1 takes glass, 1 takes plastic, 1 takes paper. I've seen where they take it all to cash it in. I've been down the streets where the stolen cars get taken and stripped. I've been down streets where gringos never go. There's no reason to go there. No reason, unless you're like me, just curious to see what's there.

I may not be built for that environment, but I'm comfortable in it and the environment never seems to mind me. After all, I'm just passing through.

However, I do notice that guys who walk with the "you don't want to fuck with me" swagger, are usually the guys who end up getting fucked with. When you're on somebody else's streets, it's not a good idea to act like you own them.

I think this is pretty accurate. If you grew up in a rough area in the US (or Canada or wherever), you likely won't be too uncomfortable in Centro. However, if you grew up in a nice suburb, you very well might be terrified. And of course, many will be between these extremes.

Also, if you're black or Latino you won't stick out like a fair-skinned white guy. Though the locals will still be able to spot that you're not from there.

People from the streets who are better off now will not want to go back there. Can't understand people with resources who will choose to live there. Good to visit at safe times, never to stay.

Ah, yes Maracaibo. I remember having to crouch to go under the bar and then under the little door. I wonder why there were trying to hide the rooms back then. They probably needed a license / permission that they didn't want to pay? And the rooms are indeed a mess.
