I speak English some Spanish, enough to have a great time in Latin America. How well does Spanish work in Brazil? My understanding is that they speak Portuguese which I do not know.

Generally speaking, Spanish speakers and Portuguese speakers can understand each other. However, most Spanish speakers would be hesitant to start speaking Portuguese and vice versa. For the purpose of mongering and general survival, your Spanish language skills will take you far enough. Similar to the difference between Russian and Ukrainian, the fundamental grammar is the same but each language uses many different words and pronunciations. Speak Spanish slowly using simple words and the Brazilian garotas will understand you just fine.

I agree that Brazil is a great mongering destination, if you are brave enough to deal with Covid. But, Mexico? I would not put much faith in their ability to control Covid. I would suggest Colombia as a better alternative, in these troubling times.

I went to Mexico in August and September it was all good, I'm Brazil now everyone masked up, checking temps before you go in stores / hotels. Hand sanitizer everywhere. As far as Mexico if you interested in Tijuana Hong Kong is back open I'm not that brave but if you are in my opinion one of the best house of hoes in North America. If COVID concerns you it would in my opinion it would be better to be close to home than in another hemisphere.
