I live in the SF Bay Area, so housing costs here are off the roof. But I can do the reverse and rent my place out in the Bay and move my ass to Medellin. This pandemic is giving me life changing options haha. I'm single, no kids, good shape and healthy minus all the partying / drinking / white-pink powder consumption haha. Let's see how 2021 turns out for me. Similarly, I’m looking at a 2 or 3 bed with 2 bath apt in a fairly new building or one that is being constructed, with a pool and gym and hopefully hot neighbors haha.

I am probably in a similar boat. Other than during shut-down, I travel to Medellin once a month. This June I'll pass the entire month there. If I can find a reasonably priced place that is in a safe place and the building has a pool, it might just buy, not relying on any rental income. If you want to rent to others, then you often end up buying in the popular places and playing the inflated prices (even though you do get a rental return). Not sure I really want other people living in my place.

What you have described is a real "eye opener" as to how tough it is for guys in Europe who want to travel. In the USA you can come and go as you please, and Medellin is easily accessible from the USA with no quarantine requirements and only a PCR test for entry, and the majority of mongers do come from the USA versus Europe. If I had to guess I would say no more than 10%-15% of the foreign mongers in Medellin come from another Country besides the USA.

I am of the belief that at this moment, Medellin for those who can get here, is probably the best mongering destination available on the planet right now. With Asia basically shuddered because of the quarantine requirements, where else can you go with so many mongering venues and options available, basically Medellin is wide open right now with no lockdowns albeit with some very limited nighttime curfew restrictions. And it's a total buyers market. So based on this, more and more guys are looking and coming to Medellin as evidenced by all the newcomers and their posts, albeit a lot of guys are also staying on the sidelines because of the Pandemic, and rightly so.

So in your case, your smart to come and stay a while having to go thru so much hassle to get to Medellin.

My only advice to you is to confirm that the airline your flying on will allow you to fly with only purchasing a one way ticket. I know for a fact in the USA from which I fly they confirm at least on COPA and Jetblue that you have a return ticket or that you have residency.

Thanks for the advice on the one way ticket. This is in the back of my mind and I have had issues before with other destinations and one way tickets. Thats why I did a lot of research previously. I think with the US version of Expedia a number of tickets can be refunded within 24 hours as well as number of sites that provide confirmed bookings for a small fee so I'll have them on standby just in case.

Also I now understand why everyone in Medellin thought I was from the USA.

Yes, Bello is big and you obviously no what you are doing. I am really referring to the more average gringo who is not as experienced and doesn't grasp the language.

Some of you may have noticed that a lot of Colombians have features that could pass for Asian. Some of myex-wife's family look as much Asian as Colombian to me. But my white skin, blue-eyed ass sticks out like a sore thumb. I fully agree that Bello has a lot of hotties. When I first started going to Colombia 16 years ago, the Bello girls were always the best, whether at the Mansion or at a casa.

Bello is a big area, as I said in an earlier post, the top 3 barrios to stay that are safe and walking distance to almost everything and with hot chicks in virtually every corner haha is Niquia / Obrero / Cabaas in that order IMO. Not many guys report much about Bello, maybe you can make a more detailed report about it for us, are you able to blend in like a local? Did you always feel like there was not going to be any trouble? I have seen some Youtube videos of an area in Bello near Madera Station looks like it is called San Jose or La Florida on Google maps and that area where the guy was partying was crawling with gorgeous babes, it actually put Lleras Park to shame in that area, but of course very much a local vibe and not sure if any were pros who would go home with a Gringo. The guy that made the videos was dark haired and fairly dark complexion so he probably blended in okay at a glance.

I don't think I'll need a lawyer since I do have some trustworthy paisa friends who live in Bello who can guide me on the ground when I return in a few months. I carry 2 passports (Panama & USA), so I can theoretically live all year in Colombia by maxing the 180 days on both passports. I would have to leave country 1-2 twice a year, which I plan to do anyways once I'm settled in Medellin full time. Those that asked why I'm buying if I'm not living there yet, why not! I have a network of good pros and non pros and I can look into renting it out. But I don't need the rental income, so I can keep the apt empty if I want to or maybe even let a non pro I've known for years stay on the free just to take care of it.

And I'm not even looking at gringo areas like Poblado or Laureles. Obrero / Niquia / Cabanas are the top 3 barrios on my list in Bello. Hot chicks just everywhere, even after all these years in MDE, girls in Bello just on a different level. Sabaneta in the south is also on my list. It's a nice and chill town and close to Envigado / Poblado as well. So it's either up north or down south for me.

Sounds like you are in an enviable position, and have disposable income as well. However as "trust worthy" as you think your Paisa friends might be, you really should have a Colombian lawyer who handles real estate transactions to guide you as it is not a straightforward process for a foreigner versus a citizen buying real estate, and you could be in for some very unpleasant surprises. As far as your motivation to live in Medellin full time, totally enviable as I mentioned and hat's off to you in preparing to do so.

I took an Antigen test within 3 days of my departure flight. It was 110 mil plus 13 mil for domicilio. A guy came to my apt at a predetermined time and swapped my nose and I got results within 6 hours and they guarantee results within 24 hours. Communication all done in Whatsapp and in Spanish. +57 (315) 467-7121. It's called Unidad Medica Centrolab.

Entering USA was easy, just make sure to have digital copy of test results as they check at Colombia airport and at any international transit stop. Never seen an almost empty customs/immigration line when I transited through Houston (btw wish all the Texans the best).

The CDC has stated a required quarantine for a incoming air passengers entering the US. What was your requirement and what was you told upon entering the US. Your answer can be helpful.

But clearly you do not know about the Colombian squatters law. You have never had any rental problems in Medellin? I would never allow anyone to stay in my property if I was not Colombian. Don't fool yourself about friends in Colombia! In 4 years I have 2 friends from this Board and my current girlfriend, other than that, everyone I have ever met in Colombia has had a motive. The greatest concern about buying a property in Bello came from my girlfriend and the owner of the home that I was going to buy in Bello. Even the owner made me aware that everyone in the neighborhood pays a "Vacuna" a protection tariff to the local / neighborhood bosses. My girl quickly made me aware that she was afraid and did not know how much the Vacuna would be, especially being in a relationship with a Gringo. So good luck on obtaining property in Colombia. My only advice is make sure you have your legal ducks in a row! Pollo Negro is out!!

Some things to consider if your thinking of buying an apartment in Medellin. Are you buying as an investment, or just a place for yourself. Based on the amount of money you want to spend, you won't be able to buy a very desirable "gringo rental property" if at all in Poblado, but in Bello you can buy something very nice if just for yourself. If done properly you should be able to obtain an investment visa for a period of one to three years from which you can obtain a Cedula. If you were investing upwards of 200 K USD you could obtain a resident visa, which basically is a green card. As far as bringing any money into the Country, you need to engage a Colombian attorney to correctly register the monies coming into the Country, if not, it will be very difficult to get your money out of the Country. You said you hadn't plan to retire just yet, but if you work remotely, and are in Colombia more than six months a year, your considered a tax resident and must file just like a citizen. As far as buying property in Medellin, it's like the wild west with no "exclusive listings", there will be multiple agents representing sellers and different prices posted and they don't have Escrow companies, and the due diligence is performed by attorneys, and lots of gringo's get burned. So my general advice to you is as follows: Find a top notch Colombian attorney after you have done your research. But this will be a challenge because to become an attorney in Medellin you only need a degree, and there's no bar or exam to license someone as an attorney, so most of them are not competent and may be dishonest.
