They even ask for it when you make purchases at department stores. Me and my girlfriend bought some new sheets the other week ago and they always ask at that store. The sheets did not fit so we took them back. They do not give refunds, but put the credit in the computer under her CPF. Back in the day we used to need CPF to get the utilities in our names when we rented apartments long term in Rio.

After trying all that I could (making up numbers and shit) I finally just asked my girlfriend for her CPF to plug in and it worked. I had one many moons ago, but for some reason they expire if not used. I have since applied for another on the Receita Federal website but still have not heard anything back. It you are putzing around Brazil for any length of time then you are going to want to have a CPF to make your life much easier.
