Happed only once in a local hotel where I checked in with local ID, got a call from reception they asked me to come down to lobby, I want down, there were few cops down there they asked me for the ID card and they enquired why I am staying in hotel having a local ID card, I replied I was drunk in the nearby bar and I can't leave the car there and leave to my home, I can't drive to, so I booked the room here for the night. And left collecting my visiting card, later in the morning I've asked the reception guy what's it about, he said there was some murder in the nearby home and theft of money and jewelry, so cops are everywhere making enquirys.

It's always safe. Sometimes things can go south very fast too.
