Indeed. A few anecdotes aren't necessarily an accurate picture either. There was comment pages back where someone found themselves in the middle of a major police presence but wasn't stopped from riding away. A comment was that the police were more likely there to check for weapons. One place I checked out the girl shook her head and said "only Chinese". Another place (the only one where I partook as I met a fairly chatty willing provider) my drinking companion pointed to another customer sitting with a girl in a gloomy spot and said distastely "he american". So there are a few foreigners, maybe a lot of Chinese, around there. I think there's a warmer welcome in the country next door thou.

I've walked past several low-end Lao brothel shacks mentioned before on this forum, mostly along Sithong road. Looks like facilities are terrible, but they're cheap and seem well .

Of course it could have been a publicity stunt by the police, a message to keep up the flow of tea money or many other reasons for a show of force.

I did partake there a few years back. It was hit and miss, mostly miss. Not many of the girls wanted to go with a foreigner and it seemed they were not pressured to do so.

I read online that Lao law forbids sex between foreigners and Lao citizens (if not married), and that penalties are high. In addition, those brothels could potentially have other legal issues like trafficking, and obviously, prostitution itself.

Hypothetically, what is the risk for a foreigner of partaking in such places in terms of police? Some of those places have been around for 10+ years and aren't exactly hard to find (right on the main road). It's obvious that the cops know about it and decide to let it go on, and that it poses no risk for a local. However, a foreigner does stick out, and I wonder if it's risky for us.

Are there any relevant news or hearsay about foreigners being arrested for mongering in Laos in recent times? If one gets in trouble, would it be easy to bribe your way out, or is there a strong likelihood of jail, court and all? I was tempted, but didn't partake due to paranoia, I wonder if it was justified.

It was some time in 2016. I had arrived not long in Vientaine by myself. So decided to take a stroll by the river side. I don't know if these are good sites. I just googled Veniene guest friendly hotels and came up with these. There's another one that Rockit posted, but the info is quite dated by at least 7 years. I suspect that if the same hotels are mentioned on each site, the info is "good". If in doubt, I would just email the hotel directly and directly ask if I can bring my Lao girlfriend to my room to stay all night. That approach has always resulted in getting the info I wanted.

Be careful. Highly resistant Gonorrhea strain is now also in Laos. I caught it. No pills worked. Thank God a local doctor had experience with this: Only 4 consecutive days of 30 minute Intravenous Antibiotic got rid of it. Chlamydia has similar symptoms but has not become resistant, so usual Antibiotic pills still work.
