It seems TRAI & DoT are working on some mechanism that will ensure callers name as registerd with phone operator is displayed while a call is being made. Hope this never sees the light of the day else this is going to be a huge issue, while the entire mongering community will move to apps like Telegram but then you will never know who you are talking to on telegram as you can always change the Telegram display ID.

TRAI has received a reference to begin consultation from the Department of Telecom (DoT). Consultation on the framework for this is likely to begin in a couple of months, TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela told PTI.

"The mechanism will enable name-appearing on a phone screen, in accordance with KYC done by telecom companies, as per DoT norms," Vaghela said.

According to TRAI, the mechanism will help identify callers as per their KYC registration and bring greater accuracy and transparency than some apps that identify callers based on crowdsourced data.

I don't think it is a big deal. It would just mean mongering will shift to other platforms. Already 2 of the last 5 WGs I met did not share a phone number or WhatsApp number. One of them (a couple in Kerala) was working exclusively through FB messenger and messenger calls and another Inde was only using TG.

I asked them and both said they use number only for family and friends. Both though said they always keep the data / wifi on, so that the mongeres don't have a problem reaching them.

No, this is not normal anywhere. Please go through the article and the post carefully.

The post is not talking about displaying the phone number, it's about the the identity. Meaning it will display your REAL name. The title itself says "Truecaller-like KYC-based name display system".

Caller ID in telecom terms mean your phone number, which is transmitted by your service provider along with your call to the recipient. On all phones, there is a setting (SIM setting / Provider setting) called "Show my called ID". You won't be able to change this setting unless you speak to the provider and pay for the service. I recommend you go ahead try changing this setting yourself and let us know what happens.

When you call in US you will get the Caller ID which is your phone number. In iPhone you can block your caller ID and person receiving the call will see Unknown number. But in US you can get the pre-paid phone without Identification.

Iphone has option in Settings- Phone- Show My Caller ID.
