After at least a few hundred metro trips, including 1 which was literally as crowded as it possibly could be, I'm comfortable about the safety. On many occasions people have alerted me of potential security issues; unzipped backpack, phone sticking out of pocket, even untied shoes. One morning I fainted on the Metro. Everyone nearby helped me back to me feet and someone ran to get help when the train reached the station. Nothing was taken and people showed genuine concern for my well-being.

Certainly, if you make it easy, there is always a risk someone will pick your pocket, but when it comes to risk, that one is pretty low on the list.
