When I was planning a business trip in South America, I did what we all do: Search for the flight.

This article from February 2022 states that only 1 quarter of all payments in Brazil are contactless (might be higher in a big city like Sao Paulo or Rio). But, I would like to see that overall percentage go much, much higher (like to 3 quarters) before I'm ready to get out of cash in Brazil: https://labsnews.com/en/news/busines...-transactions/. Here in the States (and especially once the pandemic started), payment by contactless credit cards has become ubiquitous, and I rely on far less cash in the States than I used to. Brazil is moving in the right direction.

I have the T-Mobil Magenta Unlimited 55 plan which costs $50/ month for 1 phone or $30/ month per phone for 2 or more phones. The plan works automatically upon arrival in Brazil, however, download internet speeds are incredibly slow. Of course, WiFi in most 4* & 5* hotels is fast and reliable, but in a bar or restaurant speeds are low and asking for WiFi pw's gets to be a pain in the ass. T-Mobil has a solution for this problem. They call it their International Pass. It costs an additional $50/ month, but you will never complain about slow download speeds in Brazil again.

For T-Mobile, you can get better download speed by adding on MAXup data to your Magenta Unlimited Plan for an additional $15 a month. Then of course they have several one-time international passes you can get at various price tiers. I've found that just maxing up on the data is good enough for me.

The use of credit cards (debit cards too) in Brazil is a push button issue for me, as you can see. I don't believe it's a good idea to rely upon them heavily there for the reasons I've already stated. ..

Not only that, but a lot of Brazilian people understand Spanish (but don't necessarily speak it). It's obviously different from Portuguese in some significant ways, but it's a similar Romance language, and if you speak it slowly and clearly enough many will understand what you are saying, even if they tell you they don't speak Spanish. If I'm having problems communicating for whatever reason (not usual), sometimes I will go there as a last resort. And then at other times, it's a first resort with women who I find don't speak English, but who are fluent in Spanish, like the porn star Elisa Sanches pictured on the left (fucked her in the butt at the Pestana Hotel). Google Fi is great for short trips outside the US. If you stay months outside, they deactivate your data. I've also found that $10/ GB is inflated US pricing. These days I use an app called Airalo which lets you get an eSIM that works in 87 countries for about $5/ GB. That tides me over long enough until I can go to a cell phone store and get a local SIM, which besides being even cheaper is sometimes required for food delivery apps (iFood in Brazil for example).
