Having spent time in So Paulo at both Scandallo and Casarao (see the So Paulo thread for full report) I then hit Rio. I had not been there previously.

I have to say that I am going to strongly disagree with the general wisdom of the forum on best clubs in Rio. We were not impressed with the most recommended clubs here, but rather found a gem that doesn't get much love here. Maybe we just got lucky. A caveat is that I love Brasileiras and the amazing Brasileira bunda, but prefer a slim waist vs a thick girl where possible. So this of course colors my thinking.

First stop was Monte Carlo on a Friday afternoon because it was close by. I warned my buddy (who is kinda new to this) to not expect much, given what I'the read on the forum, but we were in for a nice surprise. As a bonus, Monte Carlo also had an English speaking receptionist and a clear pricing card that explains the options.

It's a small narrow bar with seating on both sides and a bar at the end. The service was great from start to finish. The most important thing is you and your buddies found what you were looking for at Monte Carlo. A couple things about Monte Carlo. I have found attractive girls there. The selection is generally small and it's pricier than 4 x4. There's also a common observation that Monte Carlo (and Centaurus) feature slim Euro-style girls who tourists generally favor. That could have also been at play.

I'm not going to spend too much time defending 4 x4, but 10:00 on a Friday is probably the worst time to go. I believe I mentioned to you that you should get there around 5 pm.

They also have rooms facing the pools, which I would consider the least desirable. I normally book oceanfront, and this time when I asked for a late checkout they moved me to a lagoon-view room in the afternoon. I was surprised how much I liked that view and the room. Very peaceful.

Most of my "guests" have been ST evening affairs, so we did not have the opportunity to hang out by the pool. I took one girl to Shiso, a Michelin sushi restaurant, at the hotel. The dinner was great. And I had Terma girl come over one Sunday afternoon and we went to the beach. We used 2 beach lounge chairs provided by the hotel. Nobody questioned us. The hotel staff couldn't have cared less. When Valerie and I show up there for our upcoming 4-night visit, I will have her checked in as a hotel guest so there will definitely not be any problem for us using any of the public areas.

The lagoon side rooms are the same as the ocean front rooms except for the view which is great in both rooms. So IMHO there is no reason to pay more for the ocean front rooms unless you really want an ocean front room. In any case, I am a Hyatt member, and the front desk has upgraded my reservation to an ocean front room on several occasions. On cold windy nights it can feel 10 degrees (f) warmer on a lagoon side balcony vs. Being on an ocean front balcony, however.

OK, you may call me Mr. Wayne if you prefer. Ha Ha. But I think you have misinterpreted my story. I was not walking down the street in just any foreign country. I was walking down Soi Sukhumvit in LOS. That makes a whole lot of difference. In addition, the 2 girls were SW's not professional pickpockets. They were hanging out on the street at 2 am to find a customer not pickpocket, but when they saw me in my friendly inebriated state one of them saw an opportunity and made a play for my wallet. The girl acted embarrassed when I caught her with her fingers on my wallet and both of them wanted to immediately split without my saying a word. Interestingly, I never saw those two again even though I had my eye out for them in the following weeks.

But the incident would never have occurred if I had not acted so foolishly. Thailand is so relatively crime free that it can lull one into dropping one's guard. As you point out, "The problem is letting someone get up on you" or as I posted, it is important to "always pay attention to your surroundings and who you allow to enter your personal space. ".

A couple of thoughts come to mind after reading your latest posts. 1. Concerning "look (ing) like an idiot:" there are 3 main reasons why one might stand out with a girl at a 5 star resort like the Hyatt Barra; the age difference, the girl's appearance or dress, and her behavior in public. As far as these issues are concerned, I mostly don't give a fuck what others think plus I am pretty sure nobody really cares anyway as long as the girl's appearance and behavior is fairly reasonable and not too slutty. The bottom line is I think it depends on the quality of your GDP. For example, I have invited over some very attractive Barra Vip girls & Terma girls and nobody at the Hyatt, staff or guests batted an eye.

My 2nd thought is this: the Hyatt Barra is a great hotel on the nicest, most natural section of Praia Barra. Considering how 1st class this hotel is, the price is very reasonable. All rooms have balconies. The rooms facing the ocean are the most expensive while the rooms facing the lagoon are the least expensive, but both types of rooms have great views so unless the hoel wants to upgrade my room for free which they have done for me a few times, I don't care.

The only con I have concerning a stay at the Hyatt Barra is it's location in respect to mongering. It is roughly 40 minutes by Uber to 4 x4 which is not as bad as it sounds since an Uber from Ipanema to 4 x 4 is around 30 minutes, but if one is planning to fool around in Copa late at night at places like Casablanca, Kalabria, MAB's, or Dolce Vita it would be better to stay at a nearby hotel like the Marriott, the Hilton, or Windsor California. Xpartan had a good plan; stay in both areas. It is too bad he had to shorten his trip. But you are a standup guy, Xpartan, to cut your trip short on account of a "family emergency". A lot of jagoffs wouldn't.

I wouldn't have done it for everyone, but that particular family member is totally worth the sacrifice, kkkk.

Well Two out of the three of us found our phones missing on arrival at hotel! The hands on had been hands IN pockets. Both of us spent half the night changing passwords etc. Mega buzz killer. Just don't walk at night period IMO.

Never let anybody you don't know get all up on you and all handsy! You absolutely can walk around at night but you can never let your guard down ever. Which means not letting strangers get all close and touchy feely! And don't be walking around drunk either! An expensive lesson learned.
