It's not an easy question. If you like to have more space, vacation rentals get you more bang for your buck because hotel suites are universally costly.

If things like service and predictability are more important, stay at a hotel.

Both, hotels and airbnbs, may or may not be affordable or guest-friendly, so you must read airbnb listings carefully. As for GF-friendly hotels, there is plenty of info in this thread.

For limited budget, look for hotels or rentals 2-3 blocks away from the beach, they tend to be considerably cheaper. Also, if you're not crazy about the beach, stay at a Centro hotel instead of Copacabana.

But nowadays we're in the revenge travel mode, so expect to pay more than you would've a few years ago.

I had a girl ask for an iPhone for her mom in Medellin. Brazen for sure. Delete but had a good laugh.
