Visited Blackbeards in mid-July for a 5 day /4-night stay. Flew into STI on a 2 am flight on Spirit (left on a 2 am flight as well). Won't do it again, recommend a regular flight to POP. 2 am check-in was easy enough. Security showed me the room and said, 'get some sleep, settle up in the morning'. On to the review.

I'll just lay my backs behind the desk and sit at the bar. But did they still charge me for late checkout? You betcha!

Finally, as an FNG I arranged transport to and from STI with BB. Just easier that way, I figured. Worked out well on the pickup, driver got me there no problems. Transfer was included in the bill. Of course, I naturally assumed the reverse would be the same. Nope. Got to the airport and owed the driver $110. Dollars, not pesos. Luckily, I had that much on me, although it cleaned me out. What kind of idiot assumes that when a resort says, 'We will arrange pickup and drop-off, added to your bill' that it would mean exactly that?

Also, they advertise a masseuse on-site. Not true. Luckily, there is one halfway between BB and Jenny's. They offer a great massage for 1 K POP, well worth it. And Jenny's is an easy walk, no need to pay the moto-taxis.

So, with all the complaints, you might assume I would recommend avoiding BB. Not at all. First, despite any problems, the staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful (as they can be). Second, you would have to work hard to not get laid. That can only be a plus. But the thing that Blackbeards shines on is distance and cost. If you are east of the Mississippi (and even slightly west of it) there is no closer mongering destination, and the flights are reasonable. And the cost, my god. It is unbelievably cheap. I was very liberal with my spending, and still skated out under $2 K all in. Five days of lodging, food, drinks, and girls two at a time for less than I paid to replace my brakes. If you are frugal, you could easily do a week here, get a girl a day, and do it for under $1 K. You just can't beat that. I enjoy the Mansion more, but it's more than double the flight time, and double the cost. So, I do recommend BB for all you FNGs. I will probably go back for a day or two my next visit, but then I'm going out to Sosua.
