Unless you speak fluent Spanish without an accent they they are going to know you are not from Colombia no matter what number you call from. Everyone knows I am not from Colombia the moment I open my mouth because of my accent. They still understand me.

Since many of business, online sellers and services (putas included) won't list the prices it's prudent to inquire from a Colombian number (Can't know a price of a damn pizza without going through whole whatsapp conversation, ffs. Well, at least they are responsive most of the time).

In general though, no advantages of randos knowing you're a gringo / tourist as far as I can tell.

I wish I could help. Unfortunately, like scent free deodorant and large size shoes, Trojan XL or Durex Comfort condoms are rare or non existent in Colombia.

Does anybody know where they sell XL sized condoms? Or anything bigger than the standard size that they sell here. I've seen this question before on the forum but wasn't answered then. Hopefully somebody knows.

It's been my experience that Venezolanos here are much less likely to scam / rob than locals, and majority of them are hard working decent people. It might be because they're not at home that they are on their best behavior, or might because just how they are. I don't know, never been to Venezuela, but some of my fav people that I've met here are Venezolanos.

They do like their sandals though.

I have Google FI. I just turn on "Mobile Data" for a few minutes to do some text messages or look at a map when I do not have internet connection. Cheap and easy.

I have Google Fi too. The difference is with Colombia plan, you get unlimited data for WhatsApp so you can send and receive pictures anywhere, and it costs much less.

It covers you in a pinch if your Colombia service provider has an outage or your account is out of data.

I like to keep my Claro account always loaded with plenty of funds, when I notice I have ran out data then it's just *611#, go through the menus and get a new data package, payment deducted from the account funds.

Always good idea to have a backup of course, but as far as I know the international service providers will use one of the local provider' network and infrastructure anyway, so if local network is out it'll be the same for a phone with US or any other aboard provider while roaming. I'd also imagine local SPs prioritize their own traffic before the one they rent to 3rd parties, but I don't know for sure.

At&t and t-mobile offer account plans that include international roaming data at no additional cost. I recommend you get one even if you already have a Colombia number. It covers you in a pinch if your Colombia service provider has an outage or your account is out of data. It of course also covers you if you travel somewhere other than Colombia.

The downside to a USA phone with International service in Colombia is if its lost or stolen and the issues associated with out it, such as no two step verification, no Whatsapp, etc.

This is the risk I see for those who use them here, however for those here for short periods of time and are smart with their phones it should not be an issue, in other words keep it hidden whenever you can as if it disappears your hosed.

Seems like some like to only roll with a Colombian number here, or only a USA number, and some with both, with seems to be the ideal situation as you mention.
