It's amazing how these same debates keep recycling. It would seem most would rather take what they can use from them and move on. In my experience the hotter they are, the more attitude and restrictions. I can often get a read on that sitting at home working FB. There's of course exceptions but it takes work finding them.

Though few believe it, gems show up in the casas, and for a time that included a lot of Venezuelanas. It will often take some time walking to different spots, but they show up. I was slow to over advertise this, but am now more about Costa Rica at my age, as all is more easily accessible and laid back. The local food is also much better.

I know people who worked as teachers or engineers for state or local governments. They never lost their savings through medical emergencies because one of the trade-offs for working for a state or local government is a secure pension and a top notch medical plan. In fact, it is that very thing that attracts high quality employees who have children or spouses with medical needs.

But lets not digress. You worked as a state employee with an advanced degree and you retired as a man of modest means? What kind of chump are you? Did you ever take a class in finance or investing? Putting aside a pension and social security, you could, without a thought, have amassed a small fortune by allocating a small amount of your salary to the 457 (B) plan your governmental entity offered. (State and Local government version of a 401 (K)).

What happened? Did you drink it all away? Did you blow all of it on hookers? Or was it the gambling? How did you become a loser Paulie?

You were born under a lucky star. You grew up and worked in the US! Unless you were a complete dud (which seems to be the case) you could parlay even a semblance of an education, decent work ethic or any skill at all into a sizeable fortune. Just a small amount of investing over a long career even in State or Local government would have made you very well off if not wealthy by retirement age. Even a janitor working at the S&L government level with 4 kids could probably have managed to retire "well off".

So, when you say you are of modest means, the inescapable conclusion is that you weren't well educated and acquired no highly useful skills, I. E. A minimum wage type job. Sure you probably earned more than minimum wage given years of experience doing menial work but still.

Actually, Villainy, the government equivalent of a 401 (k) is a 403 (b). 457's are supplemental plans over and above the limits for 403 plans. You can actually put 100% of your salary in a 457 and I did this one year while working two jobs at once.

The Yew Ess educational system does a poor job of addressing financial literacy and many people who are well educated and have higher / advanced degrees don't know squat about investing, time value of money, tax planning, etc. Few college majors require even a basic finance course. I had the advantage of working next to a New York Jew when I was younger, who taught me that Jesus saves but Moses invests. Thank you for that, Yorkie.

I think 403 (b) plans are for private non-profit employees and public school employees whereas 457 plans are for State and Local government employees.

And BTW there are the normal contribution limits which are the same for 401 (K) participants, in 2024 you are limited to a 23,000 contribution with an additional 7,500 catch-up contribution if you are over 50.

I always said that you could not read. What I said (and meant) is that there are real difficulties renting an apartment in Colombia as a foreigner. The real estate market for rentals can be a panoply of rules, regulations and requirements to navigate. You were talking about having rented your apartment long before I rented mine. If you rented directly from an owner it was probably easy. If you went through an 'inmobiliaria' you would know about some of the difficulties that exist.

You were bragging about your Holiday Inn and I told you I had an apartment that would be listed as a luxury suite in a hotel and I was paying $750 a month for it. As to getting an apartment, I did that 1 1/2 years ago, I just moved into a different place that I like better. If I knew that that was your advice, I certainly would have rethought the whole thing. But now that you mention it, there are a lot of tricky things to circumvent when renting an apartment and I'll write something about it in one of the other forums. Depending on your experiences in Cartagena you might consider doing the same.
