Holy shit. Are mosquitos prevalent in Jakarta? That's the understated question of the year. I'll say that the mosquito problem is either BAD or it's FUCKING UNBELIEVABLY BAD.

A) Bad is finding 1 mosquito in every 4 Bluebirds you step into.

B) Fucking unbelievably bad is finding 3 mosquitoes in every 1 Bluebird you step into.

The difference between A and be would be the month of the year which affects temps (believe it or not) and rainfall / humidity. I'm sorry to say I can't remember which months fall under the A category and which fall under be. In August, I had an A month.

It's hot in Jakarta even at night, and the taxi drivers nap with the windows open. This naturally draws the mosquitos into the taxis in droves! And they're usually filled with blood when you splat them. The key to finding them at night is to shine your phone light and they'll usually find themselves around the beam and cast a long shadow as well as light themselves up for a splat. You'll want to take these guys out, they carry dengue fever!

Worse than Bangkok for this but it's weird with all the street food I've had I have rarely seen roaches / rats around anywhere.

Some tips if you want to avoid mosquitos:

- absolutely do not wear shorts at night. Wear long trousers and spray mozzie spray around ankles / arms.

- avoid eating outside at night if possible, stay indoors. This is easier said than done especially with the best street food stalls only open at night such as all of the Nasi Goreng places open at 6 pm. If you really want to try them, get a takeaway via Gojek. I got mine for just 20 k including delivery! First order is like 50% off.

But Philippine food is bomb. Every day I've been eating beef tapas with canin and those bomb ass little spring rolls with the vinegar are amazing also that brown soup (not sure what it's called) that they serve at the same food cart is heavenly.

There's also a spot I found that gives you a big piece of fried chicharron (liemposilog) with scrambled eggs and rice and free soup and water for 100 pesos. I've been eating there like every cpl days. And the Philippine fried chicken is better than any fried chicken I found in Thailand. Jollibee in fact is a Philippino chicken chain that is international and found in the US. So to say Indonesian food isn't much better than Philippino food doesn't make any sense, Philippine food is on par with Chinese food.

Notorious for playing small change games are the Bluebirds. I love these guys, but did you notice the price has really crept up pretty fast since COVID ended?

The last time I caught a Bluebird was 2022 - right outside the hotel for expediency. 5 minutes up the road. A few minutes in and I notice the meter isn't on (a Bluebird first in 20 years). Overall, I had such a great time in Jakarta that I decided to cancel my Bali trip on the way back to spend more time here next week. I heard Bali offers a wonderful retreat, based on the reports and talking to others, it just doesn't have the same draw to meet girls, and pricier, fewer options, and quality isn't as high. I've seen enough to know Jakarta is the better choice, saving time, money, and effort by sticking around here.

When going to destinations such as Jakarta you should aim to only spend about $100 usd worth of local currency a day. That's 1,570,000 rupiah at the current exchange rate. That's like 4 sessions at classic with money left over for street food. Just using classic as an example but there are many places where you can session for 400 mil a pop.

Also as Love it here and others have pointed out there are ATMs that dispense 50 k and 100 k notes only. So not sure which ATM you are using that's dispensing small denomination bills but if you were to get money at the ATMs that dispense 100 k notes then $100 usd would be about 15 bills which is hardly a "brick" in fact in Colombia I have kept more than 15 50 k notes in my wallet and I was still able to fold it just fine.

And also, in my experience, it's better to have smaller denomination bills anyways because people don't always have change for the larger bills especially when buying stuff in the street then you're standing around waiting for them to find change.

Nice trip report- thanks! I also stay in the Manga Besar area, and Sparks was always my go to hotel. Last trip I moved across the street to the Luminor- nicer hotel and fewer mosquitos for a few bucks more- no issues bringing girls back.

Pre-COVID there were a couple of vans full of girls around the area. I found one once right on Manga Besar, and another time around the corner from Hotel Travel. Same 300 k+ tip as Lokisari, but better selection- keep your eyes open to see if they've come back. First time I found one through a Moto tout- had to tip him 50 and also pay him 20 for transport of the girl back to my hotel. But got a cute, submissive braces wearing fresh looking 21 yr old for less than 500 k all in- recommended. I did have to pay the 300 k to the pump in the van to take the girl though. Have any of you ever taken the Jakarta Airport train into the city? I think it goes to BNI Station and some other ones too. I'm going to be staying at the Classic Hotel and wondering which would be the best station to get off and get a Grab from there to Classic.
