I have tried the pocket wifis and while they work and are cheaper, are inconvenient. Added weight and space, they run out of charge (often 12-16 hours), have to be constantly recharged. But they are easy to get and return at the airport and cheaper. There is always an information booth at the major airports staffed with English speakers if you're not sure where to find it. If you can make a reservation ahead of time, you just show up and pick up your package.

There is also esim but your phone needs to be unlocked. It's so funny that my previous phone was unlocked, but my newer phone is locked and they won't unlock it until I've used it X months.
