I am glad you are having a good time there. However, the majority of guys won't feel comfortable there as they can't understand or speak any Thai. If you're talking about the back of the bar in the area where the chairs are and the girls all sit along the back wall and the back bar, that area is replete with Young girls. There is no loss. Gold is a commodity. They weigh it and charge a $15 commission each way. You can literally look the price up online and that is the price you should be charged anywhere.

In the States, stores charge an arbitrary price that could be up to 6 times what it is worth. That is like me selling you a $20 bill for $120. Who the hell would do that? But there, you can walk into a store and see a sign that says they are having a sale on gold. This means they have usually set the price at 6 times what it is worth, but tolday will only charge you 4 times what it is worth.

Have you ever gone to the gas station and saw them having a sale on gas? No, because crude oil has a spot price. The difference in price that you see at the pump is based on taxes and the real estate where the station is sitting. But if you buy a barrel of oil then it should cost the same anywhere on the planet, same as a gram of gold.

When my jeweler in Pattaya makes a piece for me, he charges the exact same price for the gold that can be found online, plus his fee for the work.

A tip for next time, if you really want to give money to a thai woman, but not directly: go to one of the many gold shops scattered around any town, and spend those 20,000 on a necklace or something. After you've left the woman can get almost all of those 20,000 back from any gold shop in exchange for the necklace.

I totally agree with HT. It's basic free market economics at its finest. In a free market such as this, there is no right or wrong price. The actual price that the deal gets done at is the "right" price in a free market, all factors considered. I would warn that the non-Thai speaking tourist needs to really adjust their expectations though in that they're going to get overcharged and still must smile and say thank you. For a westerner though, these overcharges won't be much. Here's my issue with that statement. No one begrudges a dude for going out and spending big money on a Ferrari. But it Rich folks were to go out and start spending Ferrari money on toyotas, then it would completely screw the market for the poor in the middle class.
