Sosua is a small beach town among tiny farming villages on the north coast.

Its a tourist trap like Negril is. Also like Negril it's designed to find jobs for locals who live in a backwoods area.

As far as safety is concerned, it's a moot question. Dominican Republic ranks ahead of Brazil, Mexico, Columbia and Thailand, by most Google "Lists of' safe countries to visit. (Usual travel cautions observed).
