Initial report:

I spaced out and forgot to apply for an EVisa, which meant I had to stand in the deadly Visa on Arrival line. The wait was long, the actual processing was fast, and the cost was $35.

While I was in line, I completed my customs form online (at the end you get a QR code), and set up an Indonesian Grab account.

I didn't get a SIM card, so I used the airport WiFi to get a Grab taxi into town (less than 300 K).

You may wait for the visa on arrival. But to fill out the form of the eVisa it takes even more time! Those chaps who created the from just wanted to prove what smart asses they are:

Redtop hotel, a 10 minute walk from Classic, has a gym that I'm pretty sure is open to outsiders, though I'd call them and verify first. It's good enough to be a low-end normal gym, and thus a lot better than most hotel gyms. Has showers and towels also.

Tinder: "he is a tinder platinum member" kind of makes it sound less pathetic than it is. Almost like an airline membership. Tinder gold doesn't do much in my experience. Tinder management sucks and they ban people so easily, and so hard, that I feel uncomfortable saying anything good about it, but platinum is supposed to put you up front for the people you've already liked, considerably increasing the chance they will at least see your profile. That seems to be somewhat true in my experience, so a few weeks before arriving in Jakarta next time I'll spend some of my idle time swiping like on tinder girls near my soon-to-be Jakarta hotel.

Sorry, no idea. Is it just mobile data / internet that does not work inside for you, or is it that your phone does not get a signal at all?

Assuming you've already tried simply asking politely, maybe try this: put a 50 k bill next to your phone, wifi-settings displayed, and ask some staff they can help you connect to the wifi?

If your phone gets no signal at all, you could go to network settings on your phone and click the "select network operator manually". After a while (up to a minute), your phone should list the networks available. If it doesn't list anyone, then that zone doesn't have network coverage from anyone, so there's no point in getting a different simcard. If it lists other providers, you can try connecting to one of those providers. Probably you will get a message saying you're not allowed to do that after some seconds, because you need to have a sim from that provider, but at least it will be an indication that the signal is strong enough to connect, and you will know what company you need to buy a sim from. Just to be sure, try connecting to all of them. Maybe you will have luck and your provider has some agreement with one of the others, though it's unlikely.

Google something like "How do I manually select network operators on android / iphone", and you should see how to do it.

If your phone is getting a signal, but too weak or slow (e.g. , 2G) for data, I have no idea. Listing network operators would still show you what other operators are available, if any, and thus what other simcards you can try, but not so easy to know if their signal will be any stronger than what you already have.

I'd go the video / photo route myself. ;-)

Google translate lets you download the languages for later offline use, though not as good as when online, works well enough for text usually.

Might be easier to find some porn photos or video clips to save on your phone to show the girls later what you want though.
