The reason for the pile on has nothing to do with the term graduate or advanced degree. It has to do with your going to Medellin, kicking ass, rejecting the "conventional wisdom", and telling the truth about it. I would wear it as a badge of honor instead of fighting with these guys about it. They were going to pick on you for something.

Yes, this is probably true. The value of a college education is dwindling in USA. Certain degrees still hold value, but many people graduate college with large amount of student debt and no meaningful job prospects. So less people are going to college, especially men (women out number men in college admissions by 60 to 40% and there is an increase in the trades (which are great careers for many).

"Professional degree" is not about trades (technical degrees encompass the trades and more) but instead refers to education that prepares students for careers in specific fields that often can require licensing or accreditation (but not always). Examples include medicine, dentistry, law, and engineering. Some professional degrees may also be considered "terminal degrees" in that they are the highest level of education in a particular field. I have an MBA and have hardly ever heard someone say advanced degree. The more common term would be graduate degree or post-graduate degree.
