The only safe ATM at GRU is the one in the baggage claim prior to exiting Customs. .

The Bradesco ATMs between T2 and T3 are fine. I have used it for many years.

The only safe ATM at GRU is the one in the baggage claim prior to exiting Customs. Never use an ATM at GRU that is outside security, I. E. , land side. Assume that all the land side ATMs at GRU have skimmers. Before I learned my lesson, I had a couple of cards shut down because of fraud. I didn't lose any money, but worse, I could have lost my access to cash while in the promised land. Luckily, both times the fraud charges happened just as I was leaving Brazil.

I was referring to $1000 USD. Not in the sense that you must spend that much in Scandallo but just in terms of your financial situation and general mindset towards money as a result.

You can definitely go to Scandallo, have a few beers, try to keep your tab low and take one girl and get out for $300 USD. And you will probably conclude it was interesting but over priced. This is because $300 is a lot of money to some people.

But if $1000 USD is not a lot of money to you, you can go and get $120 bottle of gin and a table and take two or three girls to the room over a period of several hours. Maybe smoke a $50 cigar. And close out the night at $800.

For the second guy, he will love Scandallo because he wasn't thinking about saving money and the price per fuck. He was just enjoying being king of the world.

So it was just a reference to say how you feel about Scandallo totally depends on your monetary position. If $1000 USD is a lot of money then you will probably conclude its not worth it. And if u have plenty of cash then its a blast. It's all about perspective.

Just a little information after my first day in SP that may be helpful to other newbies.

At the airport (GRU), if you want a secure taxi and don't have an Uber app or a prearranged pickup from the hotel, use the secure taxi stand on the right as you exit the departure door. You walk about 50 yards to an outside kiosk with a few friendly ladies there. You pay a lady at the kiosk if you are paying by credit card, or pay cash directly to the driver. They print out a receipt for you, and a paper to give the driver. The address is on there with the exact price. I don't know if I'd save much by calling an Uber or taxi through the Uber app, but I like to feel as secure as possible when I'm traveling to and from an airport with all my stuff with me. It was about R34 to Vila Mariana near the SE end of Paulista Avenue.

I went to two different casa de cambios on Paulista Avenue today, and they were both offering to buy my $100 bills for 5. 25. The official exchange today was 5. 7. I declined and decided to go to a Bradesco bank (recommended on here as one of the best banks for ATM) to use my Charles Schwab Debit card. Couldn't believe it. They said R4. 94 per dollar exchange rate. In most countries I've traveled to, the ATM rate is the best you can find and very near the official exchange rate.

I went to have lunch at a restaurant my friend recommended in Republica. The waiter was a great guy who spoke English. Toward the end of my meal I mentioned the exchange rate problems I was having, and he told me about a place around the corner that gave him R5. 6 for his dollars the other day. I went to the place he told me, and I never would have found it on my own. It's in a little mall area that's very quiet. It is a small travel agency office that doesn't look like they do much travel business. I walked in and nobody was there. A guy in a back room made some noise since he probably saw me come in on a camera. I walked back and there's this friendly looking fat guy behind a security window. I asked if he could change dollars to Reals. He put 5. 6 in his calculator. I gave him ten $100 bills, and he gave me R5,600. His card says Grupo Moema Interpax, Praca the Republica, 177, Loja 13, Republica, SP.

Glad you found a good exchange place. But rate at ATM is even better. You just have to choose the right option! The option for "conversion" is horrible and highway robbery. They try to make you think it's the only option. On the left there will be a button that says "decline conversion" or even "cancel conversion" and that makes you think you shouldn't choose that. But you should!! Always choose cancel / decline conversion. You will still get Reis but the conversionnisbdone by your home bank at spot rate. I was getting 5. 7 just a few weeks back.

I suppose its all good you found a good cambio but the "cancel conversion" play works worldwide at all ATMs.

P.S. Card skimming is a real thing in Brasil. I used an off brand machine at the airport (not advised!) and sure enough I had two charges at a Miami Walmart the following week! Stick to well known machines like Banco 24 hrs or preferably Bradesco.

You don't take the rate the ATM offers, you decline that and just withdraw the money. Schwab gives you the rate on your statement which is usually the official exchange rate. Letting the ATM do the conversion is ALWAYS a rip-off.

Yesterday, I was in RRCambio on Ave Paulista and exchange rate was 5. 5.

They are located on the 7th floor of the building. There is a door without any signs, just a small rug with "RR" sign.

As far as Scandallo goes, if $1000 is a lot of money to you then it's probably not for you. You will find it a "bad value". But if $1000 is neither here nor there for you then its hard to suggest a more fun place on planet earth IMO.
