First of all Amman is an amazing city to visit in general. Fascinating in its landscape (ups and downs like in San Francisco, magnificent views from the higher parts, great climate, excellent restaurants which you can most easily find via Instagram), and its contradictions (great many women dressed like in Saudi Arabia, but also a more liberal minority). Just a friendly reminder that Tinder in Amman is dominated by a mafia running a drinks scam. A beautiful 20 something girl. Often, but not always visiting from Palestine, Syria or Lebanon. Will match with you and sometimes will suggest moving the conversation to WhatsApp. She will eagerly respond to an invitation to grab a drink or, if you don't ask her, she will propose a date. But she will be very insistent on meeting at a particular location. She will make all kinds of excuses as to why she cannot go to your preferred location. Often she will suggest a meeting at somewhere innocuous. A McDonalds or a coffee shop at a mall. And once you meet, she will propose going to a bar she knows. Once you get to the bar, she will drink even if you don't. A report or two on here suggested that the French Quarter bar in the Movenpick was something close to a pick-up bar. A few months ago, I decided to check it out. The French Quarter bar is no longer. But there is an Arabic disco (I don't recall the name) there in it's place. On a Friday night, the line was very long. Couples were being ushered in. Guys had to wait. I waited and eventually got to the front. They asked me if I had a reservation. I told them I didn't and they quoted me 75 JD. Inside was your typical Arabic disco setup. A small dance floor, but most people were sitting in sofas around tables. Probably about 50/50 men and women. Mostly 20-somethings. Some mixed groups, but also many groups of all women. After about an hour of hanging out by the bar and walking around, a local guy stuck up a conversation. He then introduced me to a couple of female friends of his and suggested we could all hang out after we left. He instructed me to not pay any attention to the two women until we left, presumably because of local customs. After about an hour more, he indicated it was time to go. By this point, I was very drunk. The four of us left together and, as he had a room at the Movenpick, the plan was to go there. While leaving, he told me that the woman expected 200 JD. We talked a bit as we walked out and she told me that she liked foreign men. As we were approaching the entrance to the hotel, my new friend and his new date started arguing about something. Realizing how drunk I was and getting a hint of a bad vibe, I decided that it was best for me to take the opportunity to exit. My new date seemed quite understanding given the circumstances. All in all, it was an interesting night. I'm glad I checked it out, but don't regret my decision to leave when I did.
