Thinking of making my first time to Mexicali for a long weekend. I am trying to get an idea of safety...

...And how IS the Mexicali Chinese food there? Is it just hype? Or does it actually have some interesting fusion dishes?

It is "safe". It is a big city. For more info see TomJackin's (and others) reports. As far as Chinese food and La Chinesca go, I think it's in the past. Mexicali was basically founded by Chinese laborers in the 1920's and they owned all the casinos, restaraunts and bars. I was there for three days last February and walked around La Chinesca. I didn't see many people who even looked chinese. I don't think any of them are still cooking food.

Thinking of making my first time to Mexicali for a long weekend. I am trying to get an idea of safety. I imagine that, for the average tourist, sticking to tourist areas, is probably at minimal risk.

But we are not typical travellers. Because of our hobby, we often venture to parts of town on the edge. In this case, I am looking to sample the strip clubs or massage parlors. I am not really into escort websites and social media. I want to see with my own eyes first.

Are the clubs like Guau Guau and Mosca in bad parts of town? Do shady actors hang out there looking for gringos?

For reference, I have been to Tijuana several times, but not lately. Not in the last 10 years or so. The violence has ratcheted up in recent years, so I stopped going.

And how IS the Mexicali Chinese food there? Is it just hype? Or does it actually have some interesting fusion dishes?

I have had good luck with that agency. Sometimes the hot younger chicas are inexperienced but have always received good service and good communication. Traffic can cause them to be late occasionally. The police is always the major threat as a tourist in mexico as they will find a way to search your pockets. I never felt threatened otherwise in Mexicali. The meseros are not agressive like in Tijuana.

My favorite strip clubs are playboy (cheap), el guau guau, la mosca 2, la mosca vip, las cabanas all after 9 pm.

I usually stay at azteca de oro which offer the best ratio quality / price IMO.

Hello brothers, just wanted to get some input on a potential trip to Mexicali. I might find myself in the Imperial Valley for work in the next month or so and was thinking of taking an overnight trip sometime midweek. Having been a longtime Tijuana visitor, I've always wanted to visit Mexicali because of the proximity to the Imperial Valley (I tend to find myself down there once a year for work) and as an Asian from LA, curious how the Chinese food is.

My typical game plan for Tijuana has always been simple: Check-in to hotel, Uber to the Zona and partake in a SG, then either grab food somewhere in the city or chill out at one of the bars to refuel, massage to get a nice rub down and power nap, eat a nice hearty dinner, and cap it off with a TLN with an agency or Telegram girl. All-in, I'd probably spend anywhere from $700-750 including hotel. Unfortunately, this was pre-COVID and I've noticed prices have gone up as expected.

Having limited knowledge of Mexicali, I'm wondering if this game plan or something similar would be worth it or just try to plan for a Tijuana trip later down the line. The main priorities for me would be to get that first nut out of the way with a SG, then maybe a massage, and finally a TLN with a Telegram girl. I've already gotten a general lay of the land in terms of bars and SG. Appreciate everyone's reports as I've been able to piece things together based on those and some Google Map street view. I'm just wondering if safety or police will be an issue. I'm normally low-key so I've never had an issue, even walking around late at night in Tijuana but have read some concerning stuff about random police shakedowns recently but no idea how much stock to put into it.

Currently thinking of: booking a room at Lucerna hotel, making my rounds of the bars and SGs, grabbing some food, visiting Black Magic Spa (if they're still open), found a few potential chicas in the Telegram chats but most seem to be focused on selling content as opposed to booking appts so we'll see how that goes.
