Various suggestions have been made about deliberately presenting oneself in an unattractive, shabby, and scruffy manner to avoid being targeted by thugs. I've never taken them to heart. I've always made sure to dress neatly so as to appear attractive even to the more sophisticated ladies. Incidentally, I always like to enter even the most upmarket establishments with respect. It's always paid off. Vaccination card and ID always on me. Mobile phone and wallet always hidden when out on the streets. Just the usual stuff. Read the surroundings and avoid strange characters. A lot of scaremongering from some people over nothing; shit can happen at home too.

Thanks for the reply, this is very reassuring, I have looked up Cotisse, Soatrans and Bradt. Based on what I have read, I may anchor down in Nosy Be / Ambatoloaka area and look for any / all mongering options available there itself. Will mix it up with some sight seeing.

Would you recommend inviting a girl over for a night stay? Or should one stick with day time action only?

Right now I am not sure what kind of setup is available in Mada (do they have Brothels / MPs / Indies), I read some guy getting a BJ in a pizza place toilet, sounds adventurous. But if there is a dedicated place /(s) for our hobby it would help me build an iteniary around that. I will read the forum and other channels to build up my knowledge on this though.

Don't count on the BJ Story. Long time ago. Nosy Be has the best beaches and worst place for mongering. In Madagascar and Subsaharan Africa it works like that. Hit on any unaccompanied girl fancy your eye. In the coastal provinces most look for money. Transactional sex is perfectly normal. TiA. This is Africa. If you do that in the US or Europe they lock you up thanks to misguided BS policies. No need to visit brothels. In Tana and other bigger cities there's street walkers after night fall. Karaoke bars and discotheques are fun and come with girls.

Prepare to suffer on the roads. And. Arrive with a lot of time. A month minimum. BTW. Learn at least 300 words in french.

All bigger towns are ok. Just avoid Tamatave for the next 6 months. They're in the process of restoring energy and water after a major cyclone hit recently. RTFF. I read most of it. But there's only a few good posters like Amadeuss Vavy Lover New Mada Expert.

No need to worry. There are a few hotels and restaurants owned by people from India or of Indian origin in most big citiesandtowns. It's better you stay there for your safety and ease of communication. If you are on your guard then everything will easy. If you can't speak French then use the sign language.

While I am an explorer at heart and have travelled to many countries solo, I am always at a pause when planning to visit any country in Africa, it is mainly because of the safety concerns w. r. t. Please don't consider me a racist. What I explain ist just a simple observation of 30 years visiting and working in India: you are not used to the culture of courting a girl in your country by smiling at her, talking, making compliments and accept her as an equal person. In India you have acess to prostitutes through escort agencies. Which will fleece you. By masage parlors with upselling ever special request or by dirty brothels as you can find in Budhwar Peth. Talking to simple girls on the road or in a cafe will attract 100 comrades of bystanders, listening to your sweet words and making comments to the girl.

In NosyBe you not find brothels, you not find massage parlors for sex only, you have no need to search escorts on the internet. Just walk along the beach or the road, smile, greet them with a friendly "Bonjour" --and the girls will find you. Yes, there are 3 discos in the night where professional ladies playing the usual tricks. But in general, as Neddy did say, if you not fall sick of the typical salmonella shit poisoning, eventually catch the plague, get hit by a speeding tuktuk, suffer from malaria --anything else is fine.

Forget all this government sh. t. Either completely outdated or exaggerated. It's perfectly safe as a solo traveler. I use public transportation wherever I go. Don't flash valuables. Be careful after nightfall. At crowded places pickpockets. Safer than India. In fact you're safer than a tourist. They get robbed occasionally in their big fancy rented SUVs. Especially in the West South. Cattle rustler. Travel only during the day. Either fly or use reputable transport like Cotisse or Soatrans. Buy the Bradt Madagascar. You're all set.

Does being a foreigner in pursuit of mongering activities put a target on your back? (I understand general stuff like dressing modestly and not being a show off, but reality can stretch much beyond these generics).

Never been to either and my finances are not limitless. Which one would you recommend?

Uganda ist cheaper. Flights from Europe. Egypt Air hast good offers. If you know what you're doing there's a number of cheap Ethiopian run guest houses in Kabalagala. I hardly pay more than 10 $ a night for a cheap guest house. Street food is excellent. Rolex. Pussy is in abundance. Not as greedy as in Kenya. In fact there's a lot of Kenyan students studying at Makerere and other Christian universities. Cost are 30% lower to get a degree in Uganda. Plus in Kampala you get [Deleted by Admin] pussy as well. And fine Restaurants too. Cheaper than Nairobi.

You don't need a contact upon arrival.

Since it was my first time, immigration asked mme for hotel booking. I didn't have one.

They then asked me if I'm here to visit a friend. I said yes, here is his number.

They have called my friend (malgache) right in front of me, he confirmed that he is the one sorting out my accommodation.

That's when they let me pass.

When I was trying to get on my plane from the UK, they refused me to board. I said that as far as I know the visa could be obtained upon arrival.

They said that's not the issue, the problem is that I have no return ticket. I told them, I hadn't bought one as I was not sure if to stay 3 months or to extend it by an extra month.

You cannot extend your stay past 90 days. You should know that If you RTFF.

Ah, so many memories! Here is a fun one. Probably sometime between 2007 and 2012.
