I was there 10 years ago, and the streets were crawling with African prostitutes, same for Napoli. Last time I was in Napoli, they were all gone. Has the same thing happened to Palermo?

There were no ads in the local paper. My hotel didn't want any guests during the day let alone at night. The owner said that there were police checks to check that everyone was registered. Maybe, maybe not but there was a huge police presence backed up by the army. With the current terrorism in Europe Palermo is taking no chances. This does mean that the city is incredibly safe, not even trouble from kids.

I don't like wandering about at night and saw nothing during the day. However there are a lot of refugees from West Africa. See the West Africa threads. And if you approach them you might be lucky, the problem is accommodation. A good place is near the train station, with your back to the front of the station take the main road on your right called Via Roma. A short distance rings you to Lidl supermarket on your right. In front are stone benches with lots of Africans, you might be lucky. They will not approach you but you can talk to them most speak good English, these are not working women but check West Africa forums.

They always bargain, I offered 40 Euro and accepted 60 Euro. The girl was 27 gave unhurried girlfriend experience and gave no trouble. Her flat was a hundred feet from the supermarket. Afterwards she wanted to stay with me so we went off for a meal, she only wanted a coffee, as she had no job I could have had her during all the holiday, however it was my last day.

No one wil care about you in Palermo.
Just be careful with your belongings and do not show off to much things like watch, camera, mobilephone.
Beware in using your credit card and insist on operating the transaction in front of you and not in the back of shops and restaurants.
If you take a taxi, accept to be cheatted by the driver at least for the first day as it happens all over the world.
I would accept the invitation, just beware as always when you are in a new place abroad.
