Just chill and relax isn't that what time off is for? Or in my case since still working and can work remote I have plenty to do during the day while taking long lunch breaks for mongering. Also I like to stay in a nice hotel in a good area with a pool and shopping and dining close by. I also like to interact with locals and the "regular" nightlife scene. Stayed in Fiesta American Monterrey Tecnologia last year and encountered upon a private party with DJ that security said I could join but had flight the next day.

I'm in a similar situation. If it weren't for the distance, it would actually be cheaper to fly to Colombia or Brazil than to fly to Monterrey from central Texas. I find it less of a hassle to take an overnight bus, Tornado or Omnibus VIP (not Greyhound / Flix) to Monterrey than to deal with flights, parking, security / immigration lines at the airport.

Yes! I could take a bus but 8 hours from Austin not for me. I take nice buses when within a country Costa Rica, Colombia Eje Cafeteria region and more recently CDMX to Puebla. I find good quality bus companies and very comfortable traveling in them but for me max hours I can do is 2-3.

Although more expensive at least flights from Austin and San Antonio to MTY can be direct saving a lot of time and hassle. If like Costa Rica next March there will start a direct flight to San Jose on Southwest I believe. Austin also added capability of direct flight to Bogota so that opens up Colombia much more.

GDL is definitely worth it for a longer stay. And don't miss the Tequila train / bus tour and the Cantaritos while you are there.

Yep, the flights to MTY from anywhere in Texas are way overpriced. Not sure why. If flights were cheaper I would definitely go more often, I try to avoid Laredo at all costs, just too dangerous, to drive now. Bus is an option, but takes up a lot of time and I have deal with Laredo.

Monterrey is primarily an industrial city, so not really a destination besides the mongering scene. There are a handful of interesting things to do: mountain hiking and viewpoints, Barrio Antiguo, Parque Fundidora, Paseo Santa Luca, museums, and some good food and nightlife. Personally I think 34 days is plenty for Monterrey, after that it may start to feel repetitive.

I haven't been in 20 years but back then it was dangerous and less to do than rest of Mexico.

Right now for extended stays the airbnb scene in Monterrey for sure is a great value. If there's a good scene there, I'm interested.

For me, Monterrey offers me the best overall value, especially for a short trip for a quick and easy fill. It's only about a 1 HR 15 min nonstop flight and also the overnight luxury bus option, which makes it easy to get there without dealing with the airport hassle. Besides hobby, there isn't much to do as it's industrial city.

Mexico City is my favorite if the priority is food, culture, nightlife, museums, neighborhoods, and simply having a huge city to explore. The hobby scene is more expensive compared to Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Guadalajara hobby scene is somewhere in between. It has unique culture, great food, mariachi, historic architecture, and a relaxed pace than Mexico City, excellent base if you want to experience Jalisco beyond the city itself, especially the Tequila town, you can easily make a day trip out of visiting the town, agave fields, and distilleries.
