As others say. Don't sweat it just go. But if you do want to learn a bit I strongly suggest Pimsleur as the best starting point. Because it's all audio it's really helpful because the way Brazilian Portuguese is written is completely different from how it sounds. If you see it first you are kinda fucked. Better to learn by ear and come back later to see how it's written. For those with some Porto under their belt (I took the 60 hrs of Pimsleur plus spent a lot of time with brasileiras) I do find Duolingo helpful at two things. Broadening vocabulary. Stuff like garfo, faca and colher. Don't need fork knife spoon to chat up a scandallo girl but comes in handy as you go there more. The other thing is they do have quite a few listening exercises and they talk very fast (but have a slow it down button). This is helpful for improving my listening skills.

I used Babbel and a few other sources for a year, but mostly Babbel. I already had good Spanish, and now I have decent conversational Portuguese about simple, everyday things. That's all I need. Besides the translator tools on my phone, which still come in quite handy when you get stuck!

Well do you speak Thai? If not but you probably still got through your trip there okay. If you saw my reports on my recent trip you will see that I had a pretty good time and I can barely manage Porto. I spent a few months on Duolingo so I was able to speak a couple of useful travel phrases but as soon as girls and other locals started talking, I was lost. Duolingo is not so good at teaching us to listen to conversational languages compared to speaking or reading them. But Google Translate can to the rescue and aided the communication almost effortlessly and I didn't find any of my interactions with locals hampered even though there was a language barrier. I still ordered at restos and eateries okay, got help from transit staff when needed, got through tourist attractions (even though a surprisingly alarming number of staff who work in these areas don't speak English) and enjoyed my sessions with the girls of which only one throughout my entire trip spoke any English.

The only drawback with minimal Porto is that I wouldn't be able to enjoy an extended period if I were to invite a girl overnight and / or for a day to be like a vacation girlfriend as communication totally dependent on Google Translate would be kind of crappy for that long a time period. But it was never my intention to do any wifing up on my first trip to Brazil. Having said that, if I do return to Brazil with the intention of wifing anyone up for an extended period of time that I would have to get better at Porto just to have a better connection.

So as others already mentioned, for a first trip just go and see what Brazil is all about. It is still helpful to learn some elementary Porto phrases as it is anywhere in the world with even greetings as you know then locals will be more receptive.

Don't over think it and just go. Many members who go to Brazil do not speak the language.

I speak a little chit-chat Portuguese. Nothing real deep. Yes, it helps with negotiating with the girls. More importantly, it will help you connect more with the girls and just the locals in general. Sunday: Went to A Figueira Rubaiyat, an upscale steakhouse, for lunch with a couple Brazilian friends. I highly recommend it as it has great atmosphere (huge tree in the middle) and amazing steaks. For evening Favorita #2 came over for 700r plus Ubers and stayed 2.5 hours. She's another 22 year old mother and beautician. A very light skinned mulatta with fantastic tits. Oh, I agree that too much pride kills, but in this case I was getting progressively less interested in her anyway. Also, contrary to many, I've had more regrets in these situations WHEN I PAID, then when I've declined and not paid.

This is one of the reasons why I like the clinicas since the prices are set so no haggling and the girls don't get in a bitchy mood potentially giving you lousy service if they feel they had to accept a low rate.

I was just in Sao Paulo for two weeks. As usual I'm leaving some details on the trip in the hopes that it will help others.

I stayed in Moema. I like the neighborhood as it's central to where I want to go, safe, walkable to clinicas, and has plenty of restaurants as well as couple SmartFit locations (45r/day or 200r/mth).
