Yes I lived in Hotel Aist for some days last August. It is an old sovjet style "hotel", absolutely no comfort, but I did not really mind. In the meanwhile I traveled to PMR two times, also to the north to Ribnita. Tiraspol is a nice place but only suggestable during students schedules.

Last August I paid 50 Euros for a standard double room per day. There are also working girls in town, ask the taxi drivers, they will bring you to the right places. Do not forget to registrate within 24 hours at the local authorities, that is very important, otherwise you will have huge troubles when leaving PMR. Last year I had troubles while leaving to Odessa again, although I had registration stuff. Anyway, all was fine after paying some extra money.

Just three questions and a comment:

-My Russian is non-existent so will be able to know some Romanian be any kind of help (I see Tiraspol is closer to Russia BUT I'm hoping!)?

-I assume I have to register with the police AFTER I have a hotel room so I can give an address. What should I state is the purpose of my visit?

-Pay in Lei or €s (or both)?

-Thanks for the taxi driver info but, hopefully, I can "mix" with non-WGs (any ideas, discos, etc.) and my rental car will have German license plates (if that makes a difference!) so, if this fails, I guess, I can always resort to p4p!

When are you going? Want to go by car to Tiraspol some time in July. Not the best time of the year, because of university holidays, but no other choice. At least, for a first check.

- In Transnistria everybody speaks Russian, Russian and Russian! Not easy to be understood in english but no major problem either (don't know about Romanian language).

- I travelled to Tiraspol from both Moldova (Chisinau) and Ukraine (Odessa) , I never had problem and never had to pay any bribe. I travelled by mini-bus (mashrutka). You just have to know that border crossing can take from 1 up to 3 hours! You have to go trough : 1st the Transnistrian customs. 2nd the transnistrian immigration (PMR migration office) and 3rd the Russian "peacekeepers" office. Just write "tourism" as the purpose of your visit. You have to give name & address of your accommodation (hotel). You'll receive a paper ("immigration card") that allows you to stay up to 10 hours in the PMR (Transnistria). Once you arrive in Tiraspol, go to the main police office and ask for permission to stay longer than the 10 hours issued at the border. I had no problem to receive a 72 hours permission within a few minutes and it's free of charge (longer term is available, maximum three months if I understood well). The only question from the officer was : "how long do you want to stay in our country?" That's all. You receive a small piece of paper (not larger than a business card!) that you have to give to the border officer (with the immigration card) when you leave the country.

- I was asked to pay my hotel room in USD or EUR (cash money only). Otherwise everywhere else (taxis, restaurants, bars, shops) in local currency : Transnistrian roubles. There is plenty of exchange offices where you can change your US dollars or euros (the exchange rate was quite similar in the different offices I visited). There is very few ATM's, the one on the main street (October 20th street?) will give you USD or Russian roubles!

Just spent 3 days in lovely Tiraspol. Had a great time! The parks are full of pretty local girls.

Locals fill the parks at night and drink beer and play guitar. No police hassle you!

It is indeed a good place to find a real gf. Not a scamer like in Odessa etc.

Here is some updated info about where I stayed. I also got a free tour of Tiraspol.

Anybody plan to go in September? I think I'm going back.

I arrived there on Thursday evening at 7 pm My friend picked me up from the border at the border was fast and no problems we went for pizza at andy's pizza was not bad at all.

Later went to cherry caffe was empty around 1 am started to come some stunner's but they came as a group so no chance for pickup.

I Think the Kishinev girls are more beautiful and sexy but need to stay longer to find more options.

My friend stayed at Hotel Aist and found it ok, but not the greatest. Any ideas on better accomodations / lower prices? (He paid 40 and it wasn't worth it he said)

I was also there, and I agree that it is a fantastic and undiscovered place! I met a beautiful girlfriend there, so I will be going back for sure. As far as staying, locals are the only way to go. I stayed with a local guy who showed me around and it really helped!
