Not sure if you have ever done this but it works very well. Make sure you have a balance of at least 100 pesos on your Smart sim and then set it to roaming before you leave the Philippines. Then when you are in north america you can receive all your texts just like you are back in the RP. You need to put the sim into a spare mobile that is gsm capable and a partner to Smart will connect you to the network, no problem. Someone sending you a text pays nothing extra, Smart hopes you will reply using their sim which is, of course, very expensive. I usually text back with an internet texting service that is free or close to it. Really helps to keep in touch with all your friends since they don't have to go to an internet cafe to send you emails.
