But buying a drink or getting a lapdance is a good way to get to know a girl. Some girls will ask for a drink and I say no usually. Maybe you were too naive and didn't challenge their weak demand. Why do some other reports about PH don't mention anything about being made to buy a bottle? So far I've never bought, especially if by myself. But when you are alone they may suggest a couple of bottles of beer or something else to satisfy their need for the cash. If you didn't want something with alcohol I'm sure they would offer something else. The money is the key. Try offering the equivalent of the cost of a bottle minus about 25% and they probably would be happy.

That reminds me of years ago when I talked in the Philippines thread about giving the girl the money after instead of paying up front at the bar. You know how many people said that was not possible? Nobody said they ever tried to do that and it did not work. They just assumed it could not be done. I did nothing special besides telling the people I will give the girl the money after. Bought no drinks, gave no tips, just simply opened my mouth to say it. But like you said the other guys never even challenged when they were asked for the money up front. They just assumed that is how it had to be done and it was either that way or the highway.

VIP for the EncountersVIP agency is called Diamond Club. There's a white Diamond logo you can click on at the top-right corner of their website which prompts you for the password. No idea how to join, but I imagine it's just a fee you pay online. I got it for free after a disappointing experience with one of the the gals. In PH and all the other strip joints I've been to in Bogota (including Troya, Fibre, Venus, Texas, etc), it was sufficient to buy just 1 beer. No one is forced to get a bottle, even when sitting at the stage. Just look at the locals; not all have bottles. When the locals order beer, I've never seen them tip. Do the locals tip at the strip joints?
I've never tried not ordering a beer. I always get a drink at any bar I stay at. I've peeped/looked around for a minute, and not ordered anything; there's no problem with that.
All the MFer waiters at the strip joints will rip you (all Gringos) off. They will add a 50% -100% tip to the bill (for a beer). They are extremely happy if you give a 2 K tip for a beer. Even with the 100% mark-up, the beers are cheap compared to US standards, but I can't stand to be ripped off. If you care about the principle, you can order / ask at the bar. Most / all bartenders will not rip you off.
Be warned of waiters overcharging, not bringing back change, demanding you buy a imported beer (Corona) to sit at the table, demanding you buy a bottle to sit at the table, having a minimum number of beers you need to buy, etc.
Only exception might be Luna in Medellin. Never went there, but an ex-pat said it was more of a bottle service joint.
