Go to their Japanese site, click on the girls profile and check her diaries. Photos from their diaries tend to be less photoshopped. The English site has this weird filter on all girls for some reason.

Honestly not going to a more premium place is one of my regrets. (Honestly cheaping out on things is a recurring problem of mine even when I can afford a better option) Always next time I guess. At best I can order at a restaurant, and even then I kept having problems with for here or to go. I've played games and watched shows in Japanese for decades at this point so I think that has probably helped with picking up on what people are asking or talking about and probably my pronunciation. I spent about 2 months before my trip looking up phrases and responses for situations I thought I would find myself in and made a study notebook based on those. For the rest I relied on google translate. It worked out ok, and just about any effort will put you miles ahead of some of the travel bros and tourists who have done no prep. Also I cannot read or write Japanese so I relied on my phone for that as well. This was my 2nd time in Japan but I plan on putting more effort into my studies before my next trip.

As for my exploring, even some of the locals I talked to were surprised with how far out of the city I went. (especially when I told them I went to Choshi, Chiba) I made it a point not to hang out in the tourist areas too much or follow too many online guides. I was there for 2.5 weeks but still made too many plans and didn't cover it all, and felt I may have rushed through the things I did. If you do go out into the more rural areas though all the nice english signage starts to disappear and the trains run much less often so be careful of that.

For chatting with the soap and bar girls, again it was alot of text translations and the responses I had been studying. I focused more on conversational phrases than texbook ones, for chatting I think that was helpful. Weather they actually thought my Japanese was good or they were just humoring me.
