Good for you bud. That happened to me about 6 years ago in Santo Domingo, also on Gomez after I had crossed 20 (or is it 27?) de Febrero going to the Malecon. Late at night, and stupid me I passed him my driver's license. Had to pay the "fine" to get it back. I think now, the only guys who can stop you for traffic violations are AMET, so for sure they were trying to scam you.

Thanks for the comments. I entered the hotel embajador around 5:30am wednesday morning, as I was walking into the the lobby a tall india chica was walking out, working girl. I knew he meant kph, but 50 to 85 mph on the stretch from SDQ to Boca Chica is a little scary for me. In the rain none the less, at night and without street lights is more than I can handle.

The last time I had to drive at night the stretch of the Autopisto from Avenida Espana to SDQ had no working street lights.

I try not to drive at night at all.

Been down to visit a number of times now and am considering staying in the near future for 6 + months, probably in the SD area. Besides paying the fine at customs on the flight back is there any other "extended vacation" situations to worry about? Can you buy & license a car?

Sure on avenida espana you can't go that fast but once on las Americas you can if you don't mind driving with your eyes closed because of all the high beams in your eyes.

As trusting taxis/tour guides and chicas in this area can be very challenging I thought I would share my experience.

I have met so far only one Dominican that I would recommend for help with rides, finding pro/non pro chicas, drinking friend etc. And he speaks fluent english. Whatever anyone needs he always seems to know someone. I consider him a friend and I am a 40 yr old Canadian who has now lived in SD for 5 months. He doesn't do any of these above as a set business but is always willing to help. I also don't mind hanging out somewhat with vistors who want some heads up or drinking partner.
