Not sure there is a fool proof way of avoiding such, but forums like this can be valuable in helping reduce the risk by a large margin. In my opinion, AMS (especially RLD) is quite similar to Vegas, full of scammers who see tourists lured by the thrill of loose morals as easy targets.
